After you put the motor in my car do you also wash and wax? ok. ok. im jealous, hopefully soon ill be doing the conversion, Dr tim likes to stay away from these? i would really like to put a late model engine in also 96 up, so why do people stay away from them, Kevin

It's because of OBDII and the imobilizer being part of the DME on US spec 96- engines. That makes it more complicated to interface them.

Apparently it is a pain in the a@# to get rid of the imobilizer and find of-the-shelf chips. You either have to aquire a Euro-spec DME and harness ($$$) or need someone to hack the chip(s) in the US-spec DME ($$$).

Better aquire a Euro-Spec 993 that uses OBDI instead. Those have VarioRam and chips are available.

A euro Varioram is no sweat because as ischmitz mentioned chips are readily available from Cyntex for the OBDI.

I think you can also transfer the Varioram to an earlier engine.

Todd,

how much did the VarioRam set you back and is it Euro-spec?

It was almost 10K for just the motor with 22K miles. This motor came straight from Germany.

Oouch,

Actually, I am going to Germany tomorrow to maybe settle a deal on a 3.6 engine.

I am looking at a 964 though to avoid having to eat dry bread for the rest of the year.....

Where did you buy from if you don't mind my asking?

Ingo

I purchased this one from Steve at IG. He buys them and throughly checks them out. I think the guy he bought it from occasionally posts on the Pelican board.

Are the German engines coming from Harald Julicher or someone else?

It's good to see the 3.6 swap snowballing.

I think Harald. My uncle found the Turbo S engine in Italy.

I think you started it! Or at least helped it along.
Pelican better start stocking and selling 3.8 conversion kits so we can all upgrade in a few years!

Well,

I'll go and see Harald this weekend. I'll buy him some before we start negotiating. I'll keep you guys posted.

Hope that part of Germany won't be by the time I get there.

Ingo
