Porsche Crest CDR-220 into 72 911 Help Please!

I bought a CDR-220 from this board a few months back. It came with the removable face plate but nothing else. I know I must make up a panel to accept a DIN Mount radio like this.

Where can I buy a plug with a pigtail to wire this in to my 72 911? I also need to find the security code. Do I contact Porsche on this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Len

I don't think you can just plug and play here, Len. I think you have to have at least three wires from a wiring diagram:

Unswitched hot (+12V DC, all the time)
Switched hot (+12V, only on when the car is running)
Ground.

The rest of the wiring is between the head unit and the speakers, so that should be easy. You don't talk about an amp, which adds a level of complexity.

As far as a code goes, the seller should provide that to you. I think you have to pay Porsche to get the code otherwise. I don't know this for sure, so don't quote me.

Of course, you could ask your local dealer nicely for the code.

You can call Becker and they will provide a code for you for a small fee. They also have all the harnesses that will plug into the back of the radio.

You also may have to get the display set up to work with these 911s. Many of the cars that had those units placed the radio in a different spot in the dash in relation to the driver. This makes the display very difficult to read from the driver's position.

Several radio/stereo shops will sell the conectors you need.

The CDR-220 uses the standard European ISO radio connectors, easiest to find for a VW or Blaupunkt radio.

Connectors for car audio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There should be a black 8-pin connector for power, ground, illumination, etc..
For sound output you have a couple of choices, direct to the speakers through the brown 8-pin connector or use the yellow connector to an amp ( most often comes with RCA plugs)

The CDR-220 also has the option for an AUX input, you can buy several different connectors, once again the RCA style is most common.

Found a few just on a quick Google search

BHO1784 Factory Radio harness for select 1983-10 Euro Vehicles :: Installation :: Car Stereos and components
RCA-ISO3 Aftermarket Amp integration harness for Becker & Blaupunkt Radios :: Amplifiers & Audio Integration

As for the code, the dealer will need the serial number off the radio.
I think it's an 8 digit number, sometimes starts with a letter

send me an email or pm and I'll get your code

Ooooof. Reading is fundamental. I should try it sometime.

Yes, Scosche is a great place to get modular plugs with a wired pigtail. Becker is a standard layout.

Somebody asked about iPhone connectivity. I tried to buy an eBay iPhone connector for my wife's Mercedes Becker. It didn't work.

You might call Becker Auto Sound and see if they can't fix you up.

Yes. I'm actually doing that right now. I got an iPod auxiliary input cable and just plugged it in. You can't control the Pod from the radio, but the cord will charge it, and it's not that big of deal to just pick up the iPod or iPhone and change songs if you want. The only thing is that the connector is the 30 pin version, so if you have a version 5 or later phone with the smaller connector, you need to use the adapter. Otherwise, it works great.

I got my adapter from Becker Autosound. It works great on the 220 as well as the Becker TrafficPro I had installed a while ago.

Thanks very much everyone for the tips.

Pelicans "ROCK".

I can buy the "amp" used out of a Boxster, so will try that route. Will also try to get a cable from the same Boxster that has the connectors needed.

If I must make a mounting plate and there is enough room, I might attempt to angle it slightly towards the driver so the panel is more visible.

Rotating the faceplate toward you will not help. It's a vertical adjustment , not a lateral adjustment.

I put one in a 944 about 5 years ago. Got a correct faceplate from Becker for around $100. Sw Stereo probably can help you also.

+1 Good advice.

I had a CDR-220 (a decade ago) in my 911. Took it out mainly for that display problem. (maddening) I just last summer went back to a CDR-220 but this time with the LCD (not LED) display. I couldn't be happier. The display shows dark gray on an amber backlight. (like the Becker traffic pro)

Anyone need a CD-2 with Amp?
