Can I get 7x16 and 8x16 Fuchs on a '68 911L?

Hello All,

I'm working on my barn find '68 911L and I've been gifted a set of Fuchs from a family friend wanting to help kick off my project right. The blessing / curse is that the gift was a nice set of Fuchs 7x16s (2) and 8x16s (2).

I haven't received them yet, but I wanted to get some thoughts from the group as to whether there is any chance that I'll be able to get these on my '68? I understand that these early 911s had narrower bodies, just wanted to get some thoughts as to whether this would be made possible via rolling the fenders and/or selecting specific tires.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Cheers.

I think you would need to add flares.

For early cars, they came with 5.5x14, 5.5 x 15, or 6 x15 wheels. To get a 7, you had to go with a "7R Fuchs" (think unobtainium).

Hi,

For my 1973.5, I am currently using 6x16 Fuchs with 205/55-16 tires. My car is lowered and it developed a rub which was corrected (Rothsport Road and Race did the work) by upgrading to turbo torsion bars and adding a bit more negative camber.

For your SWB car, I would check with some of the SWB folks to verify this will work for you as well. You may be about to get some good feedback on your plan at the Early 911S Registry BBS on this topic (Early 911S Registry).

I see you are in in Portland! You can meet fellow Pelicans at our monthly gathering (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/pacific-northwest-us-wa-id-ut-hi-ak/500446-oregon-pdx-beers-burgers-second-thursday-every-month.html).

There are several very good shops in PDX who can also help you figure out what you need to do. where are you located?

I think I *may* have 6's and 7's on my SC (though that didn't sound right but it is what the ad said when I got it), be happy to trade even for 7's and 8's in same (good) condition. If interested let me know and i'll check to be sure..

If the deal with GaryR does not work out I woud be interested in the 16 x 8 fuchs.

Thanks,

I could not go any wider than 6"s on my old '65. 16's should not be any more of a problem than 15's. Although, I really don't like the look of 16's on a SWB. It just doesn't fit the character IMHO.

Thanks all,

some responses / additional questions below:

HarryD: Do you know what year/model rear quarter panels would suffice for this?
(also, thanks for the references)

I'm in NW Portland and would love to make it to the next PDX event, thanks for the invite.

GaryR: Let's talk, as it sounds like the 6's and 7's would fit better on my SWB. Are they 6x15, 7x15, or 6x16, 7x16?

Let me know what you find out.

I ran 16x7's all around on a narrow bodied car. It all depends on tire size and offset. Would be easy to trade your 16x8's for a pair of 16x7's and there you go.

Just to clarify a bit...SWB and "narrow bodied car" are not synonymous. 7's fit perfectly fine on a '69 + car, but I have not seen a SWB with 7's without some bodywork. I believe 6's and 7R's are max.

Sadly I know enough to be dangerous but not the complete story. I lean on experts like Steve Weiner (Rennsport systems Rennsport Systems | Porsche Performance Systems and Support) and others for these details.

Hope to meet you.

16x8 are very valuable (as Fuchs' go) - sell them. Use the funds to buy some nice 15's (or what ever is needed)

68 Porsches are valuable. SWB (68 and earlier) literally have flat sides (no flares). You can fit 6s all the way around but not 7s. 7Rs are now being reproduced (check early S registry forums) and are reasonably priced and look the part. You may be able to play with 7s off of a 944. Those might fit with some camber adjustments.

Good luck.

I've got 16x6 & 16x7 on my Carrera, I'd also be willing to trade for the wider wheels, and I'm in driving range (in Eugene).

Thanks everyone,

I'm really digging the continuous feedback from this group. Nothing like a great car community.

I'm leaning towards keeping my beauty true to original form (boxster03, I see what you're saying), so anyone with some 6x15s that'd be willing to work something out for my 7x16s and 8x16s, let me know.

Cheers.
