87 Targa Power Seats
The power seat switches for the passenger seat in my 87 Targa don't seem to work.
My first instinct would be to replace the motor. However, I thought I might ask the accumulated wisdom of this board about where to start the hunt for this project. Is there an in-line fuse or something I should be checking for first?

Hi:
I would think the first check you would do is to check the fuse. Haynes or Bentley ( or factory) manual will identify the fuse. more likely , hoever, is that the switch went bad. This happened to me and I had to buy and install a new switch. A real PITA, as you're working under the seat..but it can be done. --Wil Ferch |

If the fuse is OK try removing the switch from the base of the seat and cleaning up the contacts. These often cause failure; motor may be fine.

are both of your switches non-operational? if thats the case it may be the fuse or the motor. if its just one of the switches...it's the switch itself thats bad. i had that happen about a week ago and just replaced the switch. i paid $70 for a new one.

Those switches are not bad to restore. Biggest hassle is taking the seat out. If you take the seat out and flip it over, you can get to the leads for the motor. Wire the leads to a battery and see if the motors are operational. If the motors move the seat, then your switch is boogered.
So, you'll have to take the switch out of the seat. To do this, you must disconnect the wiring and fish it out of the opening in the seat. Label/write down the wiring connections so you get things going in the right direction when you're all done. You don't want to press up and go down or vice versa! Once the switch assembly is out, you can remove the individual switches from the cluster and separate the switch casing to get inside there to clean up the contacts. Put a little dielectric grease on the contacts after you've cleaned off the carbon build-up. Should help prevent future build-up.
