Doors are open - what 'while I'm in there' items do you suggest?
Opened my driver's side door to confirm and fix a broken ball cup central locking gremlin.
I purchased 2 of the newer 964 style door operating rod (964-537-571-00-M100) along with 2 ball cups should I wish to retain the stock threaded metal rod. Suggestions here? Are the 1 piece plastic 964 rods more durable and it's worth fiddling with the bottom clip on the actuator to change? I also bought 2 'door clips' per a recommendation on another site: (993-531-563-00-M100) Ordered Rennline aluminum door handles, lock knob/surround and lock pins figuring again - while i'm in there might as well upgrade. I am planning on using dynamat as a vapor barrier as per this stereo thread by imcarthur . Plan on having a stereo shop basically copy this as making the spacer and mounting my 6.5" speakers that have been sitting in the box is a bit beyond my skill and thus outside of my time available to learn/go slowly. So not planning on replacing the thin vapor barrier. What about other things? Greasing/lubing the power window mechanism? Suggested products for this? Is anyone selling the commonly used speaker mount found here to fit 6.5" speakers? Any mods that are 'nice to haves?' Thanks, will post some pics once the new goodies are on - should improve the look a lot as my interior is in fantastic condition but the plastic bits are fading due to age (mainly knob surrounds and door handles. Went drilled on both and will be ordering a black G50 Wevo shifter with their drilled knob and having a machine shop drill the outside handles as per Magnus' usual beautiful touch). Cheers Lars |
If your car is anthing like mine, I would suggest cleaning and regreasing every single part of the door locks and opening mechanisms.
I could not believe how much harder the door handles and outside triggers were harder to operate in my "new" '84 when compared to my other (recently cleaned/rebuilt) 911. That old grease gets so thick, it sticks/blocks/gums up everything it touches, a counter-productive effect. |
Also, clean out all the stuff that has accumulated along the bottom. I found a bunch of broken plastic parts and stuff.

put in new door stays and re-enforcement kit. I have just seen to many damaged doors to ignore this.

Will search for the stays/reinforcement kit on here - thank you for the suggestion!

someone is making ans selling the adapters in the classifieds right now. also be certain to put come cld on the inside of the outer door skin, and a layer of ccf wouldn't hurt either. start on post #9.
