Found this and had to share it. I am sure it's been posted before. WTF?

The wing may look ridiculuos but the car is a RUF CTR2 formerly owned and campaigned by Steve Beddor. This car was in the half million dollar range and was extremely fast and capable in Steve's hands. The wing in question was used in hillclimb events and the pic, I believe, is from a Pike's Peak race where the extreme downforce kept the car from flying off the mountain...

Really? I would love to know what the engineering is behind the stanchions or up rights that hold the top wing element. Looks dangerous. Awful color too - maybe its just the photo.

As you can see below, the actual color was "yellowbird yellow". There were only 16 CTR2s produced. The car was conservatively rated at 580 horsepower by RUF - famous for underrating the actual numbers. Top speed was in excess of 220 mph even with the wide bodywork.

The CTR2 featured standard all-wheel-drive, Recaro racing seats with Simpson five-point belts, enlarged brakes, an integrated roll-cage, a Ruf manufactured coil-over suspension system and a kevlar body with lightweight glass; power came from a Ruf-tuned version of the Porsche-built 3.6 litre, twin-turbocharged flat-six engine producing 520 hp (388 kW) and 505 foot-pounds (685 N·m) of torque. A later version of the same engine would bump the power output to 580 hp (433 kW).

Here is an excerpt I found on the OPs pic :

To prove his new car's ability, in 1997, Alois Ruf entered two special wide-body 'CTR2 Yellowbird' prototypes, 'Sport' versions, code-named 'CTR2sport' with 702 hp (523 kW) in the 1997 Pikes Peak Hillclimb race.

These cars were stringently built to both FIA and Pikes Peak regulations and driven by brothers Steve Beddor and David Beddor. Unlike the other competitors, both cars were not only race modified, but also duly road registered, tractable, street legal cars.

In a demonstration of the Ruf's flexibility, they were street driven to and from the Pikes Peak racecourse, and as a lasting testament to the Ruf CTR2 sport's enormous capabilities, Steve Beddor was 1st in overall qualifying (despite driving a legal street car) and finished 2nd overall in the race, while his brother David, (in the second Ruf) finished a close 4th overall. Steve Beddor's 'Pikes Peak' prototype; the Ruf CTR2sport, then went on to win the Virginia City Hill Climb an astonishing 3 times while racking up some 20 other 1st place finishes nationwide, making it arguably one of the most important 'non-Zuffenhausen' Porsche racecars of the 1990s.

Yah it looks much better in those pics - the uprights for the wing elements were changed and look much more the business, also the color is better. What a hoot to drive.

I witnessed Frank (or Steve) at the virginia city hillclimb back in the day with this car, er actually the top pictured car with that tall tail. It was purely functional in design to be fast up that hill with the downforce of this wing. This wing is removable in design but the lower arch wing is a airduct for intake and and maybe intercooling. That was superfun to sit in the car and just looks at things often overlooked like brakes and suspension components in a car that I had dreamed of seeing.
Consequently JP, your car has some real similar looks and feelings attached to it when I walk around it. Just sayin.

I remember hating that wing extension but knew that it was all about going fast around slower corners faster. When you want to go faster form follows function you know?
I believe this picture is from Virginia city Nevada but I could be wrong.

That was mean snbush67. I am never going to post again as your opinion means so much to me. I just wanted to make a difference and you beat me down. I am never going to recover from this. I have been working on being more outgoing and your remarks have caused a major set back. I am afraid to leave the house at this point. If I work hard and try again maybe I will win your praise. For now, go f yourself, jacka$$.

HAHA.
Lets just all agree that that car is sick and the wing is silly on the road. But on a time trial it's king.

I suppose the bottom line is that things can look silly, yet be highly effective aerodynamic devices...

if this goes to OT maybe someone will post a pic of the Toyota Sura wing which looked fine but harmed lift and drag; Toyota called it a sunshade after a while...
