Well, I receive my used Sport seats just a few minutes ago. I put a wanted ad for a nice factory set that were correct for my 911SC and Brian Smith replied with a nice set from his 83 Turbo.
A week or so later and 2,500 miles and there here in good order. I've actually been watching for the Fedex truck all day like a little kid I might have to put them in tonight and see if any of Brian's Turbo boost stuck to them. The leather is nice and soft and smells like Porsche heaven. They were $900.00 shipped and it went to a good cause, A hungry Turbo.

Thanks, Guys
Funny, the Turbo they came out of was a Euro and when I opened the box there was a couple of German coins that must have fell out of one. Probably been stuck in the seat for a lot of years.

I have the same seats, but my center cushions on both sides are in need of reupholstery. I'd like to have them done in a heavy tartan similar to that in the MB Gullwings. Does anyone know of a source either online or in Southern California for that kind of upholstery? I'd have a local shop do the work, but I need to find the material. Doesn't have to be any kind of match, just similar.

Autos International has one of the best reupholstery in the country.

If your seats are like those and you order from Autos International...make sure they know you have the '82 and newer sport seats or the new upholstery wont fit...they are different (smaller) than the earlier ('74-'81) ones and have different recliners. One of the guys who posts here made that mistake last year and it cost him a few bucks.

Here's a picture of mine and an earlier set, I think the early ones were 74 thru 79.

The PET shows the older style through 1980 and the newer '81 and up. That agrees with the 911, 912E & 930 Porsche Authenticity Guide. I have seen both styles on '81s (maybe leftovers installed by dealers or maybe a midyear change) but only the new styles on '82 and newer. The key is….if you order replacement upholstery for sport seats...order the '82 and up if you have the round dial that turns on the recliner (like standard seats) to adjust seatback angle. If you have the levers on your recliners to adjust seatback angle, order the earlier type. Nice seats and a great price for leather ones!

Mine have the round dial for adjusting seatback angle, but I don't want an entire reupholstery kit. I just want to have the middle cushions redone in plaid.

I purchased a pristine set of leather sport seats in the summer, I must have driven at least 100% more than usual just because they're so damn comfortable!
Good idea those sport seats, enjoy the "hug" only sport seats can give. When the wife makes a comment like.... "oh, these seats ARE more comfortable than those others".........it justifies the bucks. Nice set, enjoy! Mike

That's what I read too. And like you said there was probably some overlap. But when I did a little research I found that every 1980 Weissach model that I could find a picture of ( 3 and one reg. 80 911 ) their seats had the Later style?? I also noticed the way the seat back on the earlier seat folds forward is much different. the whole back must lift to clear the side bolsters where the later seat hindges and the bolster were tappered for clearance. I'm trying to get admitted to the SSP = Secret Seat Police I think SWBSam's the Captain ? Edit: Super Secret Seat police, That's even better

I've got a set of ealy ('78) sports in my '78 SC. Absolutely love them. They are so comfortable I didn't want to stop after driving the 500 miles from IL to AL. Couple that with the latteral support and you get a really nice package. They simply fit like a glove.
Now if you are a large fellow ......

Maybe we shouldn't be saying such good things about these sports seats - don't want them to get crazy priced like the early ones so we can't get them anymore!

Sports Seat Guys:
How do you keep the bolster from getting lunched? Or do you just back out the seat to enter/exit, avoid jeans with studs etc? My body just doesn't bend like it used to . . . I have a chance to swap my blue drivers seat for a same color sport. I'm debating it because the seats would be mismatched until I could score a pass. seat. Tempting though. Ian

Bob:
Where did you get the pic of the early version of your sport seats? Are they for sale? Regards, J.P. |

Just be careful getting in and out.
Do the swap! Nothing wrong with having sport on the driver's side and regular on the passenger side, even permanently. Sports seats were available as individual options, per side, so cars could be (and were) ordered with driver's side sport only. (Some people don't want sport on the pass side to make it easier for passengers to get in and out). But you'll eventually find a nice passenger seat - nice passenger seats are easier to find than driver's seats. |
