PPI needed in Chicago
Dear fellow pelican member,
I'm looking at this car: 1978 Used Porsche 911 SC Targa at North Shore Autosport Serving Chicago, IL, IID 11062237 At 27K it is priced on the high side, but then there is the low mileage, if indeed it's plausible, and the general description sounds good. The only shop I've so far charges $140/h and I'm already down $700 in fruitless PPIs, so perhaps someone has an idea. Thanks Daniel |

That's premium money for a nice SC, but just remember that these have the original Dilavar head studs and will likely need a clutch.
Budget realistically for such things.

Thanks
Many thanks to Steve and emac for your advice.
I have since turned my attention to another SC, and with some luck the deal will come through soon. The difference in price also leaves a nice budget in case things have to by done. Daniel |

For that kind of money I'd want to see decades of records to substantiate the claimed 62,500 original miles. No records? Then I'd have to believe the mileage isn't close to original.

I surfed their inventory. They have some unique vehicles for sale and a number of them have a pretty high premium. I'm suspicious of anybody from the south side calling themselves "North "Shore".

Agreed on the engine picture (lack thereof) and not one picture underneath to substantiate the "no oil leaks" claim.
Seller has four SCs and all of them are mid to high $20's? That's pretty telling the prices are inflated. This one seems pretty nice. But I think its overvalued for a number of reasons: -No mention of ANY of the possible mechanical fixes (clutch, top end, pop off valve, Carrera tensioners, terbo tie rods, etc.) that an SC would get. -No spoilers. I know these are a personal preference, but they add to the value of the car. -Cheap tires. Not saying every car has to have Michelin Pilots. But Sumitomo are on the low end of the high performance tire scale. -Not one closeup of the wheels. This asking price should have pristine wheels IMO. Lotsa Fuchs are fuched up by harsh cleaners on the satin paint and anodized surface. -Where's the passenger side mirror? -Non-sport seats that are in OK condition. For that asking price i'd expect sport seats in very good condition. -Unique color is nice if you like it. But typically those rare neutral colors can decrease the value of the car. -I like that it doesn't have fog lights. I hate 1970s-1980s fog lights! For that kind of money you could get a very nice Carrera Targa or even a 964 Targa. Newer is typically a better bet in the long run.

To wrap this thread up, I found out that the car finally sold for a thousand or so below asking price. Mas, the seller also informed me, that he "started in the north shore suburbs and kept the name when I moved downtown", in regards to one respondent wondering about the name/location discrepancy.
Still searching, Daniel |
