Always wanted an e39 M5 (want an e34 as well). Currently have an e46 M3 & 911 SC (plus 1977 308 & my wife's 2014 STi).

Been running a BMW/911 setup for a long time though, both great cars.

I have both a 2003 E39 M-Tech since 2007 and more recently acquired an '85 M491 Targa. Love 'em both. 2003 was the last year for the E39 body style before Chris Bangle effed it all up with the 2004 E60. Wanted a real M5, had driven a few but found a clean M-Tech in silver with low miles and a great price. The looks of it still appeal to me more so than most of the BMW's made in the last 10 years. It is has issues, but nothing major.

The 911 provides a completely different experience behind the wheel, mainly because the M_Tech is an auto and the 911 has a 915. Road trip over 200 miles? Ill take the 540 all day long. Cruising around town on a sunny day? The 911 hands down.

I own a '01 E39 M5 along with 911, 930, and others. The E39 M5 is a phenomenal car and, like others have stated, I just don't know what I'd replace it with. It feels far ahead of its time in regards to all the creature comforts. It is deceptively fast and great for long distance cruising. It is my daily driver. Later BMW's have really lost me...the styling isn't as pure and the cars aren't as differentiated luxury wise as they once were. You get in any model BMW and they all "feel" the same from the driver's seat...I didn't get the same sense of quality difference between a 3-series and a M5 as it once was.

The Ferrari 355 is a great car...until you start getting the maintenance bills. Headers crack, pre-98 had valve guide issues (though if fixed not a big issue), and a $10k engine out service required every 5 years (3 if you ask the dealers). However, the sound is intoxicating and it is a great drive though under braked. It is on the edge of a modern car feel. I'll own one again, for sure, but only when they are on the appreciation curve where the regular services aren't as big of a percentage of the value as they are now. Yes...they will eventually appreciate. There is no better sound Ferrari V8 ever produced by Ferrari...and certainly nothing that sounds as good as a 355 that has been produced since.

For me...I'll stick to mostly older cars as they have much more soul, character, and handling characteristics that are fun without being seriously beyond the speed limit whenever you are behind the wheel.

I had an E24 M6, 88 911, 83 MB 280SE AMG all at the same time once. The 5 series and 911 complementary nature is interesting. I have seen the evolution of the M cars as they have become more and more fragile to the point that owning an off warranty M car is potentially a big liability while an off warranty 997 still ins't too bad.

'01 E39 530i and an '82 SC with an '84 3.2...(Close enough!)

The Bimmer is the wife's car and the one we use for our occasional trip. It is a fabulous car...Smooth, fast, and great handling with the Sport Package. Our son is hovering over us waiting to get it someday (maybe next year).

My SC is loud and fast...the wife hates it...But I love it...I will never sell it...

Two excellent cars, each in its own way...

How about a 2006 m5 and an 81 930. Both are great cars, I have owned the porsche for about 12 years. Excites me every time it take it out, but I think the bmw almost trumps the porsche in almost everyday. In 'm' mode it truly feels more exotic and likely is slightly quicker in a straight line. The Beemer is also much more useable and practice. That being said, there is a little more eye candy in the 930.
