What Needs to be Done to a 915 Tranny that has sat for 18+ Years?

Hi Guys I have a 915 Transmission that has been in my Car in a Garage that has not been run or driven in 18+ Years. I have some other threads posted on this.

I am working on getting the car road worthy again and My question is there any kind of Service/Maintenance that needs to be done to the Transmission after sitting for so long? i.e. Changing Fluid etc?

Any insight, opinions, and/or help with this is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Regards...

I would imagine that a fluid change and a visual inspection would suffice.

I am sure the experts will follow up shortly.

If it was good when it went into storage it should be fine now. If it were me I'd put in new seals on the shift rod, input shaft, and output flanges.

Just change the fluid, look for metal in the oil. Anything that was an issue before it was parked will show up quick enough.

Kendall 80w/90 GL-5 DINO oil. If you have LSD you will also need a friction modifier.

Hi Peter Thanks! Did the LSD come stock on a 1977 911S? How do I tell if I have one? Time for some more research!

LOL! It's easy if you can lift the rear of the car so both wheels clear the floor. Do that, release the e-brake, engine off, in neutral, and turn the RR wheel/tire forward. If the LR wheel/tire turns the same (forward) direction, you have LSD, if the LR wheel turns opposite the RR, you do not have LSD. LSD was always a pretty rare option, but back in '77 it was almost unheard of.

the serial number on the bottom tells if it has a limited slip from the factory aswell. I forget the code. I would think youd have more of a chance of the clutch being bad than anything with the tranny itself. But no sence pulling it out till you try it.

Hi Pete thanks again for all your help! I did as you suggested and this appears to be a non LSD Tranny. So just go with the "Kendall 80w/90 GL-5 DINO oil" and no "Friction Modifier" then?

It would have a 12 stamped between the type number and the serial number.

Is this the right "Kendall 80w/90 GL-5 DINO oil" just want to make sure I find what you are recommending:

Kendall 1043927 NS-MP Hypoid 80W90 Gear Lubricant - 1 Quart, (Pack of 12) : Amazon.com : Automotive

Here is another link as well:

What you have to do to it depends on what (if anything) was wrong with it when it was parked. Otherwise, blow a space heater directly on it for a couple of hours to warm it up and drop the oil. Replace with Swepco and yer ready to go.
