Well the car made the trip from Long Island NY to Ft. Lauderdale FL, in a total of 22 hrs: 10 hrs for 520 miles 1st day , then about 750 miles in 10 hours. Then the last 2, 1/2 hrs the last morning making about 1450 miles or so.
The amazing thing was that the car used about 1/4 litre of Mobil 1 oil and didn't miss a beat!!! ![]() But the A/C was a nightmare. Even though it is working well- 'Porsche -well' is not enough for 90 + degrees!. Having the top down for more than a few hours was tiring!. So now I am window shopping for something with better A/C. With a top budget of $40,000 I will either settle for a Vette, a Boxster (Okay, I know!!!) or a 993 coupe. Question... 993 Coupes- A/C any better? Well I am off to Miami to window shop! later guys! ![]() Rgds Ben |

Ben, I have a lead on a beautiful black 99 off-lease boxster, owned by a local doctor, well in your price range. e-mail me if interested. Will take a trade in.

"getcher motor runnin'...head out on the highway...lookin' for adventure...and whatever comes my way." Way to go! But if you're looking for air that will make ice cubes in 100 degree heat? My wife's 4.0 Ford Ranger does that, and we bought it new for a lot less than 40 grand. (Just kidding, well, sort-of) I'd argue for the 993 over the Boxter....dunno about the air on either.

Have driven my 964 in 100 degree, 90% humidity lots and always had the a/c keep me plenty cool. I'd have to assume the 993, with the same or better a/c, would do the trick for you.

Congratulations on going the distance, Ragtop.
I know you and your car have been through some trying times, but I'd improve the AC before I drove a Boxster or shelled out the dollars for a 993. Specialty Porsche AC shops have gotten 33-degree air out of R134-based systems. It might cost a little for an under-the-floorpan static condenser or other mods, but it's cheaper than a new car. I'd say fix what you've got, unless there are other reasons why you want to upgrade. ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery page |

Thanks guys,
I have thought about adapting the A/C on the ragtop but the bottom line appears to be that unless you spend serious $$'s on basically making it a 964/993 system then it's not worth it. I agree the belly type condenser might help. But the air is just not coming out with any volume!. Which of the many fans blows the cold air?. Where is it located? Looked at a a few 993's in the $42K bracket and they seem nice cars. I am still fighting the choice of car from within and will ponder over it until I see my car again in October!. I must bring my Bosses yacht south now NY-FL, stopping in the Chesapeake on the way!. Thanks for all the advice Rgds Ben |
