76 engine harness

In the process of cleaning the engine harness from my 76 in preparation to put it back

First bit I clean up looks odd.

This car has had a hard life and I'm trying to revitalise it

The part of the harness from the cd unit seem to have been modified

The 2 white wire shown in the picture are joined in a non factory way

I will be trying too use the sc wiring schematic to repair this

But if you have any idea what's going on here please let me know

Regards michael

The two white coaxial wires with the shield appear to be wired correctly as per the numerous '73 to '77 harnesses that I have built in this exact manner cloned from unaltered originals.
The pre '73 1/2 engines used a different type of wire and shield that was more robust but also more labor intensive and expensive to create.
If you need any advice feel free to send me an email, PM or just ask it here.
The blue brown and black wires are more of a concern to me as they would normally go to a 3 prong voltage regulator connector.

Michael,
Don't worry, I was wondering what the heck was going on with it the first time I took one apart too!

Porsche kept changing wiring designations and locations in the rear fuse panel area a lot before 1978. (every year from '73 to '77!)

The SC wiring diagram will not work for this area as it shows the 6 pin cdi wiring. You need the 3 pin drawings.

Send me your email address and I'll send you a few pictures of the '76 and '77 wiring schematics that will help you a lot.
It is late here but I can do this for you tomorrow evening. I may even scan them as I have wanted to make copies so I don't mess up my factory manual originals.

Here is a picture of the area you are working on.
You really need the entire print for a complete picture of what is going on.
I'll see what I can do tomorrow for you.

T2a is the white T shaped connector. They are using the old purple/black color coding for the tach signal wire in the drawing but actually use the white coax to bring the signal to where it needs to go. The red power wire goes to the same T2a connector. Hope this helps.

Personally, I would install a new remote VR as I don't recognize that one.

The corrosion and heating on the main power lead to the alternator is not a good thing.
You should cut it back to good copper and crimp a new connector on it, as well as clean it all up. I hope it isn't too brittle to be able to reshape it once a connector is installed.
I'll be scanning the prints when I get home from work in a few hours.

Is this the right one
Part #: 911-603-206-13-M260

If so the one in my car only has 2 wires the new ,VR has 3

I guess the schematic will sort that out

Thanks again
Michael

Where does the black wire with the double connector in your very first picture go?
Looks like a replacement for one of the shield wires from the white coax?

Here you go from a picture I made up in another thread:
The brown wire with the ring in your pictures is the one you would use.

Not really sure the later picture in this thread shows it at the CD unit just in front of the 3 pin connector

My dad pulled the car down during the painting phase I now have to put it back together using photos and schematics.

I have a very basic understanding auto electrics and a multi meter to check continuity

Regards Michael

Looks like you have it under control so far..
Trace the wire out with a meter. I'll bet it goes to the distributor area. Either to the coil or the dizzy.

Do you know what this is

What is the cylindrical unit with the red/black and brown wire that was bolted in just above the VR ?

I believe it is a filter for radio noise suppression. Should be indicated on the prints.

Most wiring diagrams don't show the capacitors. That is for the CDI. You can see it on my '73 cis panel. It goes acrosss the power to the CDI and the ground tab.

Ed is correct, it is C12 in the drawing I posted. (and sent to you)
In the legend it is described as the ignition capacitor.

Questions for Dennis

G'day Dennis

I have a few of questions you may be able to help me with.

1. What is the y shaped connector with brown, black and blue (photo 1)

2. You will see in the attached photo that the red/white wire from T14 to WRU has been externally replaced with a red wire, should this also feed the second connector for the supplementary air valve, which on inspection is broken and must not have been working previously. Also I think a ROW 76 should not have a thermo valve but mine does with no connector at all. Any ideas on this. ( photo 2,3,4 )

3. Last question for now, in the schematic G is listed as fuel sender unit. Is this part of the thermo time switch.
When I removed the covering I found an unused connector shown in photo 5 yellow wire. And there is a shunt wire connecting this wire to the starter feed yellow wire photo 6. My question is if I replace the red/black and yellow wire from the cold start valve do I
A) run a yellow wire from the cold start valve to the thermo time switch ,picking up a feed from the yellow started feed.
B) run a red/black from the cold start valve to the thermo time switch.

I think that's it for now I know this is a bit of an ask to decipher but ask said previously this car has been hacked in the past

Regards michael
