CA Legacy Plate program

I was at the DMV to register my new parts car and I saw they had custom plates in the sunset style, so I asked if they still made those, they don't. But she said they are doing a pre-order for legacy plates and if 7,500 people sign on, they'll start producing them! Cool.

And they can be put on any year...

I wish we could see if they've got 7,000 people so far or 75. If it was close, I can see really trying to push it over the top.

It says a number above each plate, and it adds up to more than 7500 in total, so I figured that was an indication of how many they've received so far. Apparently they had a soft launch of 105 I read in some article.

but they need 7500 for the specific plate to launch it from what I understood...

Ah. That looks right. I saw it and assumed the number was the particular identifier of each color of plate. But I wasn't looking closely enough.

That's great if they've hit the number they need. I want mine in black.

I am going to go on record that I do NOT like this program.

California already has a YOM (Year of Mfg) plate system.
and unassigned and clear original plates can be assigned to vehicles that would have had that plate as originally issued.

Now someone with a brand new car that is blue can get "blue and yellow' plates because they look "retro or cool".
This diminishes the historical significance of correct plates on correct cars.

YOM is only applicable to 69 and older. No Blue/Yellow YOM program for autos. Commercial vehicles 72 and older can go through Blue Yellow YOM (weird).

At any rate, even though the plates will be Blue/Yellow they will not be following the same letter/numbering sequences as the original plates and the plates will be reflectorized.

It's not going to change the desirability of original blue plate cars in the slightest.

Unlike the UK "F1" plate that just sold for $1MM

I have a 1970 blue plate that is transferable and for sale

I think for the concours crowd $50k is nothing - let the bidding begin
