D-Zug Flat Fan Installation

Thought we'd share our installation of the flat fan kit produced by Peter Bailey of Bailey Edwards Cars, manufacturer of 917 replicas from South Africa. There has been much discussion throughout the years on this board regarding horizontal fans and possible reproductions, and very little information on their inner workings by those that have them, so we thought this would be of interest. We will doing the installation while concurrently adapting our MS3 EFI-ITB kit for single and twin turbo application, so the updates will come as we are able. We will also be machining our 935 pulley 935 Style Crank Pulley (as carried by our host ) to allow adaptation of crank-trigger ignition with this kit in the future.

Per Peter Bailey, the kit was created from a loaner 962 motor. The quality and workmanship of the fiberglass is outstanding. The lip of the air tower is slightly larger than the original, but overall it really does justice to the factory unit. The shroud, air guide, tunnel and fan can be had in either fiberglass or carbon fiber. We chose fiberglass to stay true to the look of the original but went with the carbon fiber fan which Peter says has a higher durabiliity in sustained high speed application.

The carbon fan was created with the help of aerospace engineers and is a work of art. Peter said that pretty much all the engineers that worked on the project marveled at what Porsche was able to achieve with the fiberglass technology of the day in making the fan itself. As we get into the installation, will show the guts more.

Love the carbon fan.

How many HP does it consume with the gearbox?

not enough to negate the cooling benefits on a turbo engine.

My jaws dropped to the floor...what a trick looking setup! $9k is not bad at all considering how rare the original vertical fan components are nowadays. I can't wait to see what car this kit is going into or will it be sold off thru your company D-Zug?
