How to remove old sealant?

My case is split and I'm going to be cleaning it today...

The old sealant residue, where the case halves join, is a redish brown smear that is VERY difficult to remove.

Any secrets?

I have had good luck using Acetone with a brass brush and plastic scraper. Just do not use any item that is harder than the alum. of the case.

Worst case have also used Stripper. Apply liberally, put object in plastic bag to reduce aeration of the stripping agent, and wait half an hour. Wash and repeat?

Best of luck!

3M Roloc discs are the clear winner..

Acetone, Lacquer thinner, MEK, Brake clean, carb cleaner... none worked worth a damn

Garage
Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)

I've read MEK does a nice easy job - available at home improvement stores.
