Is there any reason to keep the back seats?

Is there any reason I should keep these back seats out of my 71? All the hardware is rusted out.

The vinyl is not bad, just needs to be cleaned.

Nope, no reason. Put in a parcel shelf and have some usable space!

Our dog loves riding back there. That's about the only reason I can think of to keep them!

If you value originality, I would clean them up and put them back in. Folded forward, they make an excellent parcel shelf.

+1 on removing them; I made a parcel shelf and put speaker boxes below it... much handier than the seats that didn't hold stuff as well. Stuff is all I ever put back there.

Some people - very few - actually still put small children in the rear seats now and then. Other than that they are only useful if keeping your car totally original is important to you. Porsche installed those back seats because it was cheaper to license a four passenger car back then. This is not a good reason any more. If you are interested in saving a little weight, maybe, by taking them out go ahead and do it.

Make pistol targets out of them. Then you can tell people..."I'm SOOO wealthy, I use early 911 Porsche parts for target practice.

The rear seat-backs in my '88 are always down, with a "floor mat" on top of them. I think they are very useful as a nice flat cargo shelf. Plus, the area below them is a great place to stow stuff. For example, I often keep my camera in the space below the left rear seat-back. It keeps the camera out of view, & it is quickly accessible, regardless of how much stuff I have on the seat-backs. It also keeps the camera from sliding around while I am driving.

They became useless when I put the roll bar in.

I put a shelf where all my new ECU related stuff on it.

Now that it work, I'm in the process to clean-up the mess...

You own what is considered to be a classic collectible. As a result you should keep all original parts regardless of condition whether installed in your car or not. Trash or target practice is throwing away something with good value that someone could be looking for to restore their classic. Keep all original parts regardless if you use them or not. They are money in the bank. Ask me how I know.

I put people large and small back there on a regular basis. My son who's in basic training now, my 16 year old daughter. Not for any length of time, mind you. More evidence for Social Services that I'm an abusive parent!

I had not heard this before. As I understand it, Ferry was very big on practicality and flexibility. Two sets of golf clubs in the front, two kids in the back, skis on top, the car can do most anything. My first 911 was an upgrade from a 240Z when my daughter was on the way. With backseats, the 911 was bought as a family car .

At one time (probably long before computers), a 2-seat sports car was a lot more expensive to insure in some markets than a "2+2" - as sports cars with rear seats were often known. Regardless of how practical the back seats actually were for more than 10 minutes/people weighing over 100lbs, them being present moved it into a entirely different category for insurance.

I've put adult passengers back there. Makes the car just a tiny bit more practical.

My kids ride in the back almost daily but they are pretty young. I stuck my mom back there not that long ago. No, I don't hate my mother.

Seats.

Our rear seats which are in storage,
were replaced by this:

Good advice by the previous posts, put your existing seats in storage.

I sell these for a friend of mine that makes them.

Here's a one "in the raw" as we ship them. They do come with the hardware for installation. Wood is marine grade plywood, my buddy is a cabinet maker and we had an original one to pull the specs from.

We now have 7 patterns depending on the car/seatbelt arrangement you have (SWB, LWB, Targa, etc etc).

Price is $395 (not upholstered) plus ground Fedex shipping.

A couple of finished shots included as well. One is a 68 912, the other is an 82SC, and one in an RGruppe car finished out by Dave at TRE.

cheers,
Eric

Eric - did I see a speaker in that pics of the side panels?

If so, can you post more details?
