Best everyday vintage sports car
Has got to be the Porsche 911. We live on the east side of the Rocky Mountains and my son's high school marching band had a competition in St. George, Utah. Instead of torturing myself with 26 hours on the bus with the kids, I decided to throw my mountain bike on the roof of the Porsche, check the oil, load the iPod up with music and head out. I kept it in the double digits once I broke free of the icy/snowy passes. The car never skipped a beat. Needless to say, a bright blue 79 Porsche with a bike on the roof flying down the interstate garnished lots of interesting looks. (Including one from the Utah State Patrol who was kind enough to just issue me a warning for my double-digit infraction...) Twenty-four hours and 1,500 miles of driving in snow, heat, dirt roads (to get to the mountain biking trail) and construction, I wheeled one filthy car back into the garage thrilled to have done the trip. I even averaged 21mpg which isn't bad considering I had a sail on the roof. All my friends think I'm crazy when I take the P-car on long trips, especially in the winter. I'd rather drive it than an SUV any day...

With other than skinny winter studded tires the 911 ain't no snowmobile.
However, with a little bit of finesse it's hard to get them stuck.

Wonderful story; reminds me of the time that I drove my '77 930 up to N. Lake Tahoe...

Reminds me of Vic Elford's book when he had his family packed into a 930 and told the Po-Po at the road block up the mountain from the west it was a special 4WD model.

It was an awesome trip. My only regret was having taken my sun visors out of the car the week before to re-condition them and forgetting I did that until I went to flip it down driving into the sun... Oops.

Best everyday vintage sports car?
Any Porsche of any vintage. I took mine everywhere, never had a problem.

Very nice!! I'm with you. I've always had a thing for using my toys cars in ways "they aren't supposed to be used" - like throwing a bike on the roof and going for a mountain bike ride. How can you beat driving your Porsche, mountain biking, then driving your car more?? Road trip? Giddy up! But snow - kudos' to you. Not sure my Turbo will ever see snow like that :-) Now my old ur-quattro.....that was different :-)

Staged, your tires aren't even dirty...nice car anyway.
You can see gravel through your front rim where your huge turbo rotors should be...shameful Last edited by Rich Gas; 11-12-2013 at 10:23 AM.. |

Gravel? Looks like a rotor to me.
