No need to do that. That shift lever receptacle bolts onto the smaller tube that is detached from the shift tube. Reattaching the small tube in the correct orientation via welding/brazing should restore the order.

thank you friends for all who chimed in. it helped to believe the diagnosis was correct. i finally convinced the shop to weld the end of the shift rod, as many of you prescribed. especially the likes of john walker. i showed them the posts on pelican. they finally relented. and today i picked my baby up. she is shifting like a new car, amazing. i have faith the weld will hold fine.
couldn't have done it without you guys. have a great weekend. so glad to have my targa back in the garage, where she belongs.:)

i'm gonna give Stahl motorworks a try next. gunnar says they don't service air cooled porsches. thanks for the info, have a great weekend.;)
