Who here also has a 944?
Which do you drive more? How do you use the cars differently?

I have a 944 and a 924S along with my 911SC. For me the 944 was my DD in college and briefly after. Although I would love to have driven the 911 every day the 944 was more practical. Even by today's standards its not terrible on gas, it has modern accoutrements like AC (which my 78 SC does not) and is generally a very user friendly car. That being said the 911 still saw plenty of use even some daily use in there I guess it just depended on mood. The 911 is obviously faster and more fun but the 944 has its moments as well. I have recently been thinking about moving to a 3.2 911 as my DD.
The 944 crowd is also a bit different than the 911 crowd. I guess the best way to put is when I was feeling like this I drove the 944 Sixteen Candles Final Scene Movie Ending Video - YouTube but when I was feeling like this I drove the 911 Against All Odds Car Chase - HD - YouTube Regards Dave

Great clips, especially Against All Odds!
Funny, with an S2 the 0-60 and 1/4 mile are essentially identical to the 911SC.

I like the huge area under the hatch of the 944- Makes a great tools/parts hauler.
Had a friend ask a while ago if the 944 parked at Home Depot with the air compressor and hoses in the back was me. Probably..... I also like that the 944 has no prestige. Fun to drive, yet attracts no attention from other drivers. |

I drive my 944 for a few weeks and then drive the 911 for a few weeks. I love them both. The 944 is more comfortable and handles great. The 911 is faster and does not handle as well but that makes it more fun (or scarier sometimes).
I have a fantastic commute to work - 26 miles each way. This morning I drove the 911 and maintained a cool 100 on the freeway which was fairly empty this morning. Then I have a quick 2 miles thru the country which ends on a fantastic, wide, empty, zig-zagy road. I've been chuckling all day as I managed to do a perfect drift around the empty curved road this morning. I rarely get it right but this morning was pretty good. Of course the 944 takes the turn faster but the 911 pulls out of the turn much faster. To answer your questions: Which do you drive more? How do you use the cars differently? 1) I always plan to drive the 944 more and spare the 911 but I can never seem to park the 911 after I get driving. 2) I drive them both the same - they are both great cars. 2b) I've hauled lumber in the 944. |

Me too. I have one of the last 951S s ever made 91MY. Its fun, faster and handles better than the aircooler. I also race a 3.0 S2 engined 924 S.

I have an '80 911 SC and an '86 N/A 944 (see sig below). I split my driving between the two of them, partly depending upon the purpose of the trip (as previous posters have pointed out, the 944 has much more cargo space), and partly simply on mood.
I live 1000m up in the Mountains to the west of Sydney, Australia, and have to drive long distances to work and back, to visit friends etc. I find both cars completely reliable and capable for this purpose - albeit that I spent a good couple of years fixing the 944's many PO-induced ailments before it did become reliable. Much of my driving is through twisties, and I've come to enjoy both cars for different reasons in those places. The 944's handling is perfectly balanced and neutral; the 911's is of course rear-weighted and somewhat eccentric. But both handle superbly in their very different ways, in my view, and each has attributes that lift them above most of the folks who (all day, every day) seem to want to race me through those places. Specifically, each accelerates reliably through the corners with much more confidence than most sports cars, old and new - even if the 911 is much harder work on the driver in those conditions than the 944. (The absence of power steering doesn't help!) The 944 does feel somewhat fragile after the heft and build quality of the 911, though. And I feel guiltier about over-driving it. Also, regardless of those published figures, my (Euro spec) 911 SC is clearly much quicker than my (Euro spec) N/A 944. Two very different cars: it's as if I have to re-learn each car after driving the other one. And yet there's something about the precision of steering and handling that makes them feel members of the same 'family'. So much fun...

I have an 82 SC (Johann) and an 86 951 (Lothar)
Both great cars, both fun to drive in very different ways. One is civilized the other raw. Both make me smile. There are some lucky people on this thread. ![]() ![]()

I am in this exact predicament. I love both but the practicality of the 944 wins cause I have two kids and just sold my m3 wagon (yes, see my posts, its an alpina but close enough). Wifey likes 911 much more but rear is so small.
Can't decide on which to buy (used to own a somewhat ratty rh lt1 944). |

Dave and I have done some great drives together and we did a Stop light race once (he has it on video), while my 85.5 944, 2.5l 4 cylinder, 150 HP did not beat him it did hold it's own for a bit but lost to his 911 by the end of my 2nd gear (still lots of fun), I have never drove a 911 but love every thing about my 944 and hope to have it for many years, so test drive one, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Bought a 87 944 back in May mainly to use for a track car but decided not to gut it all the way so I could still use it to run around in.
My 78 911 Targa has more power and puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it but I also enjoy trashing the 944 around some of the back roads. ![]() ![]() Scott 78 911SC Targa 87 944 NA |

My father and I are joint owners of an 87 944S. It gets driven quite a bit, mostly by him. (I have difficulty prying it away from him.....)
My 911 does not get driven very much at all these days--darn thing is beginning to get too valuable to drive. I feel like every SUV is gunning for me when I take it out........

Hey, I'm up in Afton. Good to know other owners are nearby. I keep thinking myself as a dual owner of 911 and 944 turbo, but my 951 burnt..so technically I am a 911 owner with 944 spare parts all over the yard!

That is gorgeous…with the Fuchs and 931 nose vent. Very Carrera GT looking. I want to do that someday…build a Carrera GT look-a-like out of a 951.
