Engine bay touch up - paint type?

The motor is out of my '89 for a rebuild and I brought the car home to do some sprucing up of the engine bay.

It's hard to tell, but my assumption is that the bay wasn't clear coated at the factory (Forest Green Metallic). If this is correct, did they just leave it basecoat? I thought basecoat wasn't hard enough to hold up on it's own without clear.

I'm pretty sure I can get single stage metallic made up at the local paint shop, if that's the way to go. I just want it to be the right type of finish.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks!
