Question Sport 9000 50 profile tires on 79 SC

Does anyone see any problems using Dunlop Sport 9000 size 225/50 R15 and 195/50 R15 with 7 and 6 inch Fukes on a 79 SC? I know they are a smaller diameter than standard, but it seems that they would lower the car a little, which is suposed to be desirable, and it would also lower the gear ratio to the road and increase lower RPM torque.

That is a huge discrepancy in tyre diameter front to back - around 30mm. The back is probably fine - about I have 195/50s on the front of my '69 and they are tiny (even compared to the tiny 205/50s on the back).

Maybe 195/60 or 195/55 - I don't know what is available in 195/55 though and the 195/60 range is pretty limited in good tyres. 195/60 is about 10mm bigger than 225/50. 195/55 is about 10mm smaller.

205/55 is almost exactly the same as 225/50. Maybe not a bad plan because the selection is good. I don't know if the Sport 9000s are available in that size. Bridgestone S03s are though.

I've got 7 and 8 x 15 on my car (originally off a 76 carrera 3 litre). I agree with Cam, the discrepancy between the front and rears is a little too big. My 7" run 205x50 and 8" run 225x50. It is a good look IMHO.

Yeah, in case Cam's post didn't make it clear, the "50" in 195/50 is not a fixed size, it's a percentage of the tire's width (in that case 195 mm). So the difference in sidewall height between a 275/50 and a 195/50 would be very dramatic. A tire size calculator will help you get a pair of different-width tires that are the same overall diamteter.

I run 205/55R15's and 225/50R15s on 7" and 8" rims. They have the nearly the same diameter, and identical profiles. There is still a pretty good selection of these sizes in high performance tires. I've got Dunlop 8000s mounted now, and have been very pleased with them for street use.

The problem with 195/50's in front is the weight rating, NOT the 'look' so much!
