Need help with malfunctioning cab top

My cab top does not open. So far so good, but here is where it gets complicated.

Initially the workshop said the controller is faulty but they didn't have an exchange unit. I sourced a second one and that produced the same error, so I think I have to look further. I have since replaced the switch (which was broken) and the control lamp (which was fried). Sadly that didn't fix the problem.

Here are the symptoms:
- the control lamp stays on
- when I press the switch the lock motors turn about a third of the way
- when I press the switch again they turn further ; three presses open them all the way
- the roof motors never kick in
- when I toggle the switch to close the lock motors close all the way ; however, the right side motor continues to turn until I let go of the switch

I looked at the PCB but there are no obvious broken solder points. They might still be there but I can't see them.
I also checked the micro switches in the roof and they work fine. The two switches in the back seem to be set correctly but I don't understand how the upper one is supposed to work : looks like the little plate never touches the switch. Not sure about the lower one, I'd have to open the roof to see if that works.

I would highly appreciate any suggestions as to what to test. What could cause the lamp to stay on? I have a suspicion that there is some kind of switch in the lock motor and that is malfunctioning - that would explain why the motor continues to run. Does anyone know?

This still does not explain why the roof does not open once the front is unlocked. What could cause the controller to think it can't open the roof? Is there a way to test the roof motors separately?

Other ideas?
