88 Carrera clutch pedal problem.
Hi all,
I need some help trying to understand what happened to the clutch pedal on my wife's 88 Carrera. She was out with car last night and she called me to say that the clutch pedal only had half the normal pedal travel. She could shift gears and the car was very much drivable, except for this problem with the pedal (according to her it was getting progressively worse). I told her to just drive the car home as it was. When she got home I got in the car and sure enough she was right. The pedal was about half way down to the floor. I tried to pull it back with my foot but couldn't. I tried pulling it back by hand and it just popped back to the normal height. It was as if something was binding and would not allow the pedal to return fully. I took the car for a ride and it drives fine and the pedal is normal now. Has anyone experienced this before? Is this a sign that something is about to brake in the pedal cluster? Any and all help/suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Bill. |

That is a hydraulic clutch, but my first guess is pedal cluster. If that is not a problem, then I would move on to slave cylinder and master cylinder.

+1
check the brake fluid reservoir level to see if it has dropped. Check underneath the booster in the trunk and under the dash for leaks. Also check the master cylinder (around cluster) and slave for leaks. Try bleeding the clutch slave cylinder. During a pedal cluster rebuild, I found a slow leak under the dash beneath the booster. There is a small depression in the trunk floor ( follows contour of vacuum booster) with a small hole with a plastic plug where the fluid collected and was weeping past the plug. Turns out it was the master cyl', so I decided to replace it and the slave as well. While testing during the actual bleeding process, the pedal acted the same way as yours (your wife's) did. Only after bleeding completely did it work properly. BTW, the clutch action is much smoother now - that was my first clue before I discovered the leak.

Clutch pedal
yelcab1 and steely,
Thanks for the response. While reading the chapter on the pedal cluster in the 101 projects book, I was beginning to suspect the pedal cluster or the master cylinder. Your confirmation that this may in fact be the problem is comforting and confidence building. I am now ready to confront the problem. Thanks, Bill. |
