1976 3.0L Carrera. About to take ownership.

Hi all, just joined the forum. I am about to take ownership of my fathers 911. He is handing over the keys after 17 years of ownership.

A brief history of the car.
Delivered to the Porsche dealer in knufsford, England on 8th October 1976. Exported to Australia in mid 80's. The only mods I know of are the 11 blade fan my father put on in 95 and a short shift 5 speed 'box to replace the original 5spd 'box. Apparently the 2nd owner chucked it in reverse while at high speed. Not good for the gearbox.

The car is has an original sunroof and air con(?).

I would like to make some more modern performance and handling improvements but don't know what just yet. Any thoughts?

The car has become rundown over the years and rarely leaves the garage now. Needs a full restoration to remove some minor rust, new paint and electrical work.

I look forward to spending many hours here looking for advice and ideas.

Will

Keep it original and love it. I let my '77 Carrera go a few years ago and regret it. I've since had 2.7 and 3.2 cars and still miss that 3.0 varreta.

let's see some pics - does it have MFI??

for more modern performance and handling improvements you will want to replace all the suspension bushings with either:

1. new rubber ones from Elephant Racing, or
2. polybronze from Elephant Racing
- most people like the rubber, but see this for a comparison:
Yet Another Boring Rgruppe Car – Part II, Suspension
a 3rd option is Rebel Racing bushings

if you are older, or have a sensitive Princess and the Pea Pod type wife or gf, get rubber

also, replace the old shocks with new digressive shocks

plug those above terms into the search box for lots of info

1st thing to do is to make sure that all critical safety issues have been addressed (again, search box)

Thanks, I'll post pic's ASAP.
She is fuel injected. I think that's called CIS on the forum.

Hi Will and welcome.

I will point you to the Carrera 3.0 website so you can get an idea of the rarity of your car!

Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0

The limited numbers are shown on the site, and particularly rare are RHD variants.

I own an Aust delivery 76 Carrera 3.0 that I race in Group S historic racing. Now that 2.7 Carrera's have gone north in price Carrera 3.0 has been the next car to buy for racing here in Oz. As such the price of non modified cars is also heading north.

You're a lucky guy to have this car passed down, and with known history.

My 2c. whatever you do, try and keep it original and any mods make, try to make them reversible.

They are a truly great car. Congrats and good luck.

Thanks. Sounds like the consensus is to restore to original. Probably the best option too. Think I will have to change the colour though. Yes, it does sound like it is rare. Less than 490 RHD ever made. Have got a rough quote to restore to like new condition excl. engine rebuild for around $33,000 Aussie.

Hi Will
Fantastic gift from your dad. (I take it you are the only son!)

Those 3.0 Carrera's have a great reputation in Australia. Everyone who I have spoken to, that had one, has been very nostalgic recalling their ownership.

However I suggest you do a a bit of investigation and reflection before you commit yourself to such an expensive restoration.

As your car is ex UK your 'minor rust' could be hiding serious rust & your rough quote may be just a starting price and you could easily overcapitalise the 911 by spending more than its worth. I think it would be wise for you to know exactly what body & mechanical refurbishment is needed, before you start.

I dont want to scare you - but check out this english horror story - I have a very good friend who has found this on his ex UK car.

Whereabouts in OZ are you?

if CIS, then a lot less valuable than MFI - still, the provenance is important to you

Thanks. I'll look into it. The car was exported to oz when it was about 8 years old. It has been in Brisbane ever since. No. I've got 2 brothers. 1 is into Mopar and all things rockabilly the other has no taste in cars. So long as its new he doesn't care what it is.

Pic's

Here are some Pic's.
Nothing great just yet.
Will get her out into the sunlight for some better shots.
If it wasn't still road registered & insured I would call it a barn find.

These cars are fetching good money in Australia, over 50-60k and heading up. As mentioned they are also highly sought after for Group S racing.
Congrats, on the car. You won't regret spending the money on it, providing you get quality work carried out.

And keep the colour original...

Thanks,
Have had a couple of rough quotes around the $30,000 mark.
Both include back to bare metal and reassembly polishing every part before it goes back on.
Of coarse if things that are worn out need replacing that would be added to the bill.

I think that one day this model will be VERY collectable, but probably never worth as much as a say, 2.7RS

I'm in Brisbane and the car spent only about 8 years in the UK before being shipped to Brisbane & spending the rest of it's life here.

Long term it will be a better return on investment if you repaint it in the factory colour.

Well if it's the fastest colour it may be worth keeping. After all the speed I can get.
