Seine Gate Shift Question
Installed the Seine Gate shifter with the spring tensioner which conveniently locates the shifter in the 3/4 plain. Really like how it acts like a conventional shifter by springing back to that plain but my question is, what does the additional tongue attached to the shifter really accomplish? I know it is supposed to secure around the installed new gates but what does that really do? You either get to the 1/2 plain by moving the lever all the way to the left or you automatically end up in the 3/4. Yeah I know this sounds stooped.. but stooped is as stooped does.

Rick, I'm pretty sure the same spring that returns the shifter to the 3/4 plane also creates a side (axial?) load on the shift mechanism in the transaxle housing. The tongue/tab takes up this side load so its not transferred to the shift mechanism. That's why it's important to get the plate and shifter tab adjusted properly during install.

shifter
Hi. New 81 SC owner here. I have been told by locals here in San Diego that the WEVO was the way to go but after reading several post it seems like the Seine is a good deal and makes life easier. If I am not tracking the car this seems like the obvious choice. Did you get the shifter here at Pelican?

Reason why: There's a shift "dongle" at the end of the shift tube inside the gearbox that causes the shift rails to move fore-aft to select the desired gear. Without the carrier plate tabs to create a resting area, the opposite but equal spring tension may force the dongle against the shift rail and thus transfer more vibration and noise to the shift housing and lever. ![]() In the photo above (rotate gearbox 90º for correct orientation), the "dongle" is the lever-like object with the ball end nestled in one of the shift rails. Another view: ![]() You can order our Gate Shift kit from our host or directly from us. Hope this helps, Sherwood SeineSystems.com |

Hi Sherwood,
I just installed the Seine shift gate on my '86 and it is so much better now! Is the 1-2 gate also to help slot into second a bit? Can you elaborate on the best method to get it adjusted just right? Thanks, Franny

The there's the obvious Seine "GATE" shifter, if the tab wasn't there it wouldn't be a gate.

so when in the 1-2 plane and in 1st or 2nd gear, the tab should be resting in the left side if the gate. Is the extra noise transfer the only way of knowing it needs to be adjusted... or is there a trick of knowing the the position of the lever is in "neutral" (not loaded).

The adjustments are the same with and without the kit. The tab though should have enough clearance when you pull the lever into the 1/2 plane so it slides in easily. Once in gear the spring tension will hold the lever's ear pressed against the gate tab. |
