Hello, New 1981 911SC Targa Owner

Hello Pelican! My name is Mike. I am a newbie to the 911 world. I have had a 1986 944 NA and restored it over the last two years. A gentleman in the local Porsche club asked me to sell an investment property with no room for commission. As a thank you he gave me a 1981 911SC Targa. I learned 944's over a few years from enthusiast but have a lot to learn with this car. What I know about the car is this
150,000 miles
New clutch
Needs injectors cleaned or replaced
Makes a whining noise shifting into second (rubbing noise)
Has had the AC deleted which I want to add back.
That's about it. I am about to hit the forums now to start learning. Anything anybody wants to share about their experiences with their cars is absolutely welcomed. I have heard they are a bit quirky. Looking forward to learning!

Looks like I am going to need the Wevo coupler, new bushings, clutch adjustment, and swepco in the gear box to help the 915 train. Does our soccer coach do synchros?

Welcome! I'm a big fan of SC Targas. I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with this one.

How much of your AC was deleted? If it was everything front and rear it could get a bit pricey to reinstall.

Good place to start, but I'd save the money on the Swepco and the Wevo and just go for some Kendal Hypoid gear oil at about 1/4 the cost and the coupler whisperer's inserts at about 1/4 the cost as well. Maybe check out the tranny and motor mounts as well.

DIY injector cleaning

Congratulations on your new 911 Mike. If you want to try cleaning your injectors yourself, take a look at Billjam's DIY in post #12 in this thread and welcome to the forum!

Blocked Injectors - how to clean?

I would just send them out - places will do flow testing on them too.

Be sure to replace your rubber brake hoses with new; repl. old rubber fuel hoses with pressure rated EtOH rated new hose and change all fluids.

Then enjoy the car.

I have an 81 911SC US coupe. Things to watch are the oil return tube seals, clutch cable, CIS issues - you'll find a bunch of stuff here on all of these items.

Your original AC compressor was a York - mine has never worked well, and I would consider getting a newer compressor along with some barrier hoses. Do a search on keuhl and get some advice on what you need to replace your AC.

Welcome! My '80 Targa has more brethren here now.

Expect to fiddle with CIS, replace the oxygen sensor relay, and struggle with a few other niggles. Expect lots of good help, and expect to feel lots of satisfaction when you've successfully solved them.

Congratulations! You can't beat an SC for the perfect blend of style, reliability, performance, and awesome factor.

Ac

I am not sure about the amount of AC compnents present. I will take a look. At the moment I am dealing with an alternator not charging the battery. The light is not on which is a bit confusing. Any ideas? Thanks!

welcome. you will find alot of nice people here with alot of good info.

Id take the car to sears and have them to a charging system test. It will test the battery, alternator, regulator, and starter as well as test for a drain. They do it under load and not. Cost less than $20. you could do it all yourself with a meter and a few hours but on some of these things a good baseline is helpful and just easier...

I've heard if the idiot light is burned out, the alternator won't charge due to an incomplete circuit in the sense wire. Might be worth a search, or somebody with more experience can chime in.

I don't have an SC, but I do have a targa -- the more you keep the top off the more you will enjoy your car. My top has been riding around for around 368k miles in the front trunk.

Don't worry too much about the A/C, the stock stuff is junk anyway - get an aftermarket R134kit and you'll be miles ahead. The dismantlers like Parts Heaven can get you other stuff like blower motor housings etc if these are missing.
