Red leather with dark blue exterior?

Well, I was thinking, and that's rarely a good thing... Anyway, a few months back I was loitering about in a Bimmer lot and came across an M3 that appealed to me. It was a dark blue but the interesting part was that it had a fairly bright red leather interior. Initially, I thought, "Who would spec a combination like that?" But as I looked at it, I started thinking that it went together rather nicely. As well, it had that uniqueness that is often so difficult to come by.

Anyway, what is the general opinion of all here regarding red leather (let's pretend I have a line on a nice cherry interior)/black carpet and accents interior with a dark blue (marine) exterior? Or perhaps I should just stick with the blue interior that I have now. The blue, in certain lighting, looks kinda greenish and might look hideous with the red.

I definitely don't like it, but I don't like red interiors period. That red is WAY too bright.

Yeah, I kinda agree. Well, not about disliking red leather, but rather the brightness. The M3 I saw had a darker red.

I happen to like red interiors, the car in the photo above is mine.

I think navy and red is a classy combo, I have seen a few Ferraris like that and they pulled it off. Here is a montego blue & coral red BMW 335i, it may be the same as the M3 you saw.

There is a special order 1995 928GTS, in Texas I think, that has midnight blue exterior and a deep red leather interior (perhaps this is the color referred to as "ox blood?). Looks completely gorgeous IMO. Cheers, John

Blue exterior w/ red interior is a classic vintage color combo. I personally love it...

I dig it! Looks great in my opinion. I like the unusual though...

I was thinking about doing the same kind of black treatment, only with my current grey-beige interior. I have to finally figure out which direction to go with this thing though. If I do my speedster project, the interior will be very minimal...

Good luck. I think you can't go wrong unless you all of a sudden develop a severe alergic reaction to the color red!

I totally dig the red, I think it's especially good with white/silver cars but it works on the blue 3 series posted above too. I have owned 2 BMWs with red leather and it ages well, doesn't show cracks like blue or black nor does it mark easily like the linen I have in my 911.

I think willtel's 930 interior is one of the best I've seen.

Kevin,
I too have a Dark Blue '85 with a dark blue leather interior. Finances will not allow me to change out a perfectly good set at this stage but a red interior is what I would like to install as well. The red compliments the exterior a treat. There are some perfect shades in the Connelly range Not too bright though something tasteful in the mid range of reds.

A few years ago I wouldn't have thought a red interior would work with a dark blue exterior. However, a friend of mine has a '67 Triumph TR4a with that color combo & I think it looks great.

He has owned the car since 1969, by the way. He has driven it on many, many long trips for Triumph Club "adventures" & it has never left him stranded.

I think it looks best on a 356 or long hood

Not too light, not too dark, no metallic, something like Albert Blue of the cars below and it needs to be a dark red, not true red. I think it would be amazing if done right.

I like red interiors w/ silver, white or black cars. Nothing "scientific" about it--just my preference. I suppose if the blue is extremely dark; approaching black...

Like a lot of things, it's a question of which red and which blue. Also, as helpful as computers are, it's still difficult to know what the actual red is since color rendition on screens varies. The red you show looks extremely saturated and vibrant on my screen and kind of garish.

Sorry, it's just my opinion based only on what I see. You asked!

Now that's the red interior I was thinking of - just couldn't find the pics. Not to bash Willtel's very nice interior, but I too think the darker, more somber red would be better with my marine blue exterior.

+1 blue with red guts is definitely a classic sportscar combination. I like it.

I had a white 930 with that can can red as shown above. My 91turbo has Moroccan red which is a bit darker and mottled. I much prefer the Can Can red. Old ferraris and Bentleys had that same bright red it is much nicer although I agree silver, white and black go better with it. For darker blue's grey and Ivory are really nice but hard to live with cause they show dirt so much.

I love red interiors but I admit the bright one's are probably an acquired taste. They do make a car stand out in a crowd. My wife's Boxster has Boxster Red (kinda like red clay) and we always get compliments on it. Recently there was a silver targa with lipstick red leather for sale nearby that was to die for. It was so cool looking. Go for the Red!

Kevin,

I like the second red interior you posted. A darker red like that one works well w/ your dark blue. JMHO.
