CHT and Reference sensor protective cover cracked question:
Have my engine/tranny separated for some oil leaks etc. I noticed that the protective outer layer on both the CHT an reference sensor crumbled off from years of heat cycling. Is that cover important, or just ignore it? Sensors all working prior to work... Thanks

Well, youre right there, fix it, better than trying to replace it in the car.

Very important cover. Once moisture & crud get in there, you eventually run into intermittant no-start or poor driveability symptoms that are bothersome.
There's a BMW sensor that is the same exact sensor with just a bit longer wire lead. Much cheaper than the equivalent Porsche part. Do a search and save yourself some $. Replace them both. They are both the same exact sensor, but perform different functions. One is for ignition timing (senses the flat "teeth" on the flywheel) other is for referencing the set screw in the flywheel & only needs to function when starter is cranking.

I got the BMW sensors on Amazon for about $57 each: Bosch 0261210002 Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor.
I got the CHT sensor from our host. I thought it would be best to replace all as I have the engine out and the protective layer was all cracked and just about gone like yours.

Thanks guys for your responses. Glad to see an option like using the BMW reference sensor. This 'while I'm in there' has been a slippery slope! But, nothing beats a sweet running, leak free 911! Can't wait to get her back together.

BUMMER!!! I just today replaced the crank speed and TDC sensors today, $158 a piece on Pelican... I could have saved $200 by buying BMW sensors!!!

But I agree and surprised that the BMW part does not shows in the "Other Brands Available" box.
