Brainiac Question - Motor Mount Changes ?
Well, I pulled the motor from the Beast today because I need to do a bunch of things. I have an issue that I would like to address since I have the motor out and was wondering if anyone knows the following:
What changes are there in motor mounts throughout the years? Specifically, I am referring to the vertical steel piece (attached to the motor) that has the 2 bolts that connect to the chassis mounts. My problem is that when I install my motor, the holes in the mount don't align correctly up to the mounting holes in the chassis mounts. They are fine "port" and "starboard" but are off "fore" and "aft". Standing at the back of the car, I have to push each side of the mount forwards, towards the front of the car, about an inch for the holes to line up with the chassis mounting holes. I think its because I have the G50 and its a little longer. For those who don't remember, the basic specs are a 70 chassis with a 78 3.0 motor and a G50 tranny. What I am trying to find out is if there is later style "verticle" piece that would bolt on and line up properly. I haven't been able to find any pictures of the later styles so I'm shooting in the dark! |

Mark:
For what it is worth, the cross member on my 2.7 was the same as the cross member on the 3.2 except that the earlier version used a bolt and nut setup on each mount where as the 3.2 used threaded bolts only. Make sure that the ends of the cross member that accept the mounting bolts are not bent which happens frequently when the threaded bolts are removed after years of being in place. If you have the nut and bolt version of the cross member then bending will not be the problem. Good luck.

This part, I believe, is actually called a 'spring' in the factory manuals...

![]() ![]() Natchamp, I have exactly the same problem on my 75. There was a new engine installed from an eariler car. It seems that the carriers [ the part that attaches to the motor, then to the "spring"] are a bit different from, front to back. My suggestion would be to see if you can find a narrower or thicker one as the case may be.
