1975 Targe 911s tire size for 6 x 15 cookie cutter wheels

So i a 75 911s with fuch wheels and pirelli p4000 215 60 15 tires. These came on the car last summer, but i have noticed they are too big and rub when i back up out of the driveway and cut the wheel. The left front tire has also developed a score or cut line all the way around the tire. Cut line is located at the shoulder where the tread meets the sidewall. I know, a bad spot. Looks dangerous so I'm switching to a smaller stock tires.
I believe the tire is being cut by the fender endge inside the wheel well.

Is this why people "roll" the fenders???

Also, i will be adding 28 tube brass front oil cooler, so clearence is a big consideration.
Stock specs list 185 70 15 as the tire size. These are no longer made.

I don't really want a low profile tire. I want as close to stock as possible. This is a car thats driven 3 times a week in the summer and in justa 30 mile radius to town.

The cookie cutter wheels are all stamped with 76 manufatcturing date so they are period correct for the car.

What's a tire recommendation based on my needs?
Thank you all very much.

I've seen threads where people recommend 205 55 15 to go with these wheels.
This is pretty low profile? Or not?

I have 205/60/15 on the front. The tires clear the fenders by a good three inches which makes me think your car has been lowered. I am running Toyo tires and have never seen any rubbing. The simple solution would be to return the car to normal height. I personally think the cars handle better at their factory height though some people like the looks of lowered cars.

Raising the car isn't like a Chevy pickup. It is just adjustments to the suspension. Previous owner had lowered my 85 911 and it kept dragging on driveway ramps. The alignment shop raised it back up and realigned the car for not much money at all, less than $100 in those days.

So I took Jim Shrager's advice from PCA ordered some Pirelli's in size 185/65/15.
Then I received a phone call from the retailer and they said they could not ship the tires because they do not meet the load requirements for the car.

To Recap: original size tires were 185/70/15
I want to put 15 inch cookie cutters on the car in the 6inch width.
I already own these wheels.

The car currently has 215/60/15s all theway around on fuch wheels.
The left front tire has developed a deep score where the shoulder meets the tread.
Looks bad and i do not want to drive for fear of a blowout.
It looks as if the tires are to big and engaging the fender in hard cornering.

I actually have a set of bridgestone 195/65/15s that are mounted on jetta rims.
I would prefer to just leave them for the jetta as back ups and not bother pulling them from the stock jetta rims.

So that leaves me looking at:
205/60/15
205/55/15
205/50/15

They then told me over the phone that the 205/55/15 also did not meet load requirements by 1 pound!!!

I'm thinking to myself just sell me the tires and ive me a bloody break!!!
Has anyone heard of this before?
I'm going to my mechanic tomorrow for his advice.

Can some offer some clarity please.
I'm now open to a lower profile tire. I just want them to fit and not rub.
I do not believe the car has been lowered, but will find out tomorrow via my mechanic.
Thanks for your input

When I had the 15" cookies on my 911, I ran 205/60-15 tires with no problem. I am currently using 205/55-15 on 16x6 fuchs.

Where is your tire dude getting the rating for your car? Most Car seller databases do not include much data on early cars such as ours.

Looking at Tire Rack, High Perfomance All season 185/65-15 tires have an 88 load rating. This is a load rating of 1235 lbs/tire, or 4,940 pounds for all four tires. I would surprised to find that your fully laden weight is over 3,000 pounds or 750 pounds per tire or 60% of the load rating.

205/55-15 tires typically have even a higher load rating.

Get a new tire guy.

Thats what i thought.

I felt like the guy was BSing me, why i don't know.
Maybe they wanted more cash from a p-car owner.... Not surprised

I had all the specs from the 1975 brohure. 2500lbs to 3025 loaded
Anyway... Looks like I'll go for the 205 60 15s or the 205 55 15s pending word from my mechanic.
What a run around!!!

I have 205/60/15s on the 70 with 6X15 deep 6 fuchs. Not sure if the offset is the same as the cookies ;but they work fine and the speedo is correct.

I used an angle grinder to get rid of the tire cutting lip.

Very little of the inside lip left on the top portion maybe 1/16", and as the wheel arch goes down it transitions to original depth.

The threads I read said that bending can trap dirt and moisture in there and cause rust.

I primed and painted the cut edges, sealed them up real good.

A few details
185/65 as mentionned in your post above would be a wrong size.

185/70 or 195/65 is more than enough tire for a 2.7. And there would be zero chance of rubbing, plus they might look better on narrow rims.

The Goodyear Eagle GT and the Kumho Ecsta LX come in 205/60-15. I think the Goodyear would perform better and is V speed rated. They will fit nicely on the 6" rim and clear everything up front. The diameter is just about right at 24.7" so your speedometer will be fairly accurate. The 6" ATS cookie cutter wheels should have ET 36mm while 7" are ET 23.3mm. They were used as OEM wheels on 911s of that era and fit properly.

205/55-15 tires would be more like 24" diameter or less. You would have more speedo error and they would look small unless you lowered the ride height.

The good news is the mechanic didn't think the tire was engaging the fender lip. He said he thought it was dry rot, so that makes things alot easier. The owner of the shop was leaning toward a 195/65. The mechanic likes the look of a 205/60.

So it seems its just a matter of personal preference at this point. I left the rims with them to spin and check to see how straight they are before i buy the tires. I decided to just buy the tires from them given they are helping make the decision and checking the rims for me ahead of time.

Think its best to let one mechanic get to know the car and do work on it.
All my parts are ordered from Pelican for my front oil cooler-- to the tune of 2k worth of parts. Got a sweet 28 tube brass cooler that like new.

They will be installing everything on a Saturday in a few weeks. Hope to be able to watch some and take pictures as it all goes together.

Thanks for all the input.
Hopefully this work will keep the temps around 210 to 220
