If any of you deceided to dump the p-car and move on to another type of performace car what would you choose within your means?

I think Porsche have some sort of advertising slogan which sums up how I feel about this right now.

That is how I feel.

Although I could get talked into a Lotus Elise or a "modernised" Europa or Elan. You would have to forbid me from owning a 911 though before I would resort to those. Ferrari's cost too much.

I also have a dream involving a Lotus Elise, two Suzuki Hyabasa engines and a common crankcase (for 300+hp at 10000+ rpm).

I'd say a TVR Tuscan. Mmmmm.... if I can save up enough, I'll get one, but as well as, not instead of, the Porsche.

185 HP Hayabusa in a 975 lbs. sportsracer, and the motor can easily be taken to 250 HP for another $10K. Not street legal, though.

Does the new Mini Cooper S count as a performance car? Wow those new Minis are great. How can I convince the wife that we need a 4 car garage so we can keep everything we got and get a Mini. For now I'll keep the P-car and just look to the Mini as a good future purchase. At least it would be a German car.

The modern ones are more likely - I'm not sure I'd find the older cars all that comfortable, from what I've read.

One car I had my eye on before buying a p-car was an Acura NSX. There's not much to criticize on that car. I've done my research. I'm much happier with the club following with P-cars. Many more people involved.

I'd still like to get one at some point, of course, but as an addition to the family, not a replacement.

Umm, I'll play. Dahlback racing in Europe has a pretty interesting audi turbo-powered Golf I'd really like to own:

600-900 hp depending on turbo and setup, pretty damn lightweight and a whole lotta fun.

If "look at me" status is your goal, the new 911 fills the bill. If you wish to be subtle about it, a top of the line Lexus or mid to low line Mercedes. Raw performance for the dollar spent, the Z-06 'vette. Top performance, and who cares about price? Ferrari. But, you asked "within your means". Hands down, if I didn't have a 3 decade emotional hook with the '72S? Z-06. In a heartbeat! Money aside, I think I'd enjoy driving a Z-06 more than I'd enjoy driving a 996 TT.

A car I've been thinking about recently, to have as well as the 911, is a Karmann Ghia cabriolet. Not origional or in perfect condition, but rather a cool looking cab in silver or banana yellow. And the great thing about it is if you blow it up, just swap in another VW beatle engine and you're going again the same afternoon :)

When I come across the bux I springing for a 88-89 Testarossa.

I considered a Ferrari Dino 246 or a Lamborghini Bora, but nothing else comes close. There really is no substitute for a early 911S or RS or ST. Notice how Porsche isn't using this slogan anymore? Maybe a Ferrari 360 really is better than the latest Turbo....

If the 911 wasn't so damn beautiful... I guess I'd look at one of these for performance without attracting unwelcome attention...

I agree with a number of you about the appeal of the Lotus 7-type toys--light weight, high power and NO modern conveniences whatsoever. Sweet.

But I drove a friend's mildly modified 95 Viper the other day and it was an eye-opener. Just enough rough edges to make it really appealing and talk about tor-que'!

If only it was air-cooled.....
