My '73T rear seat belts have absolutely no spring or recoil to them. I have to hand feed the belt back into the reel all the time and its driving me nutso!! Can these units be taken apart and the spring reversed for better action or is it a waste of time and worthy of a toss in the dumpster? My attempts to locate used belts here have only resulted in folks who share the same problem, "weak springs" and bad re-coil. Any suggestions? I am not sure when Porsche made changes in the rear belt configuration. Any advise is appreciated.

I stand corrected. These belts are the front units who's coiling unit is bolted down in the rear on the side panels. Sorry bout that.

I have some rear seatbelts if anyone needs them. I am interested in front ones, and perhaps that's what others are looking for. Good used ones CAN become available when a 911 is transformed into a dedicated (roll bar, etc) track car.
the mechanism cannot be taken completely apart, so rebuilding them is tough, at best. ------------------ '83 SC |

I've got this same problem. What effort is involved in getting access to the retractable mechanism behind the side panel?
I repaired my non-retracting seat belts on a Datsun 240Z I used to own, so I am willing to give this a shot. ------------------ MBA83Targa |

My advice would be to toss them and buy new ones. They are a bear to dismantle, plus the webbing, if original, is most likely shot. I'd hate to try them in a real crash, they could well tear apart. How well does a webbing age under the sun?

Used seat belts to me are like used underwear...you never know where they've been.
![]() I went the PEP route; a little spendy but a nice kit with all new TRW/Repa parts. The modern retractable belts are SO much nicer to deal with than the old clunkers (non-retractable) that were in my 70 too. Maybe you should check with some porsche dismantlers to see if you can salvage some from a 996. I found a set of new black 996 twin turbo seatbelts on e-bay that the owner had replaced with yellow ones. The seat of front and rear seatbelts cost me $40. I bought the front and rear receptacles from the same guy for $30. Not too bad, $70 for brand new belts. It will take a little modification to fit the reels, but they will definitely look nice and work correctly once installed.
