Gang,
My race motor is a stock SC motor with the original p's and c's but with Webers. I want to upgrade the CAM to take advantage of the carb's (more dur and overlap) and therefore will need to replace the CIS pistons. Don't have much interest in having to run race gas... Is there a source for the 'flat topped' pistons that won't bump compression so much, but will allow more valve clearance? I'm new to this realm, any thoughts about this whole process would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Well I'm learning more as it is... What I am looking for is pistons that will allow me to run a hotter cam without bumping compression... The kind with the valve cutouts.

FWIW, it is my understanding that stock SC pistons are designed to reduce emissions. I suspect that what this means is that the pistons are designed to keep some of the exhaust gasses in the cylinder. Pistons designed without emissions in mind will probably do a better job of getting all the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder. This will allow the engine to pump more air. More air = more power.
I believe you can use a more radical cam, with Webers, even with the CIS pistons. I suspect you will get better performance. But truly good performance does come from the right race pistons, and that's not what CIS pistons are. I think any legitimate supplier will be able to tell you what compression ratio you will be getting into with a given piston selection. In fact, pistons are known by their compression ratios. Some pistons are "10.3:1 pistons" while others might be "9.6:1 pistons." Many folks believe that race gas is not needed until you get over about 10.1:1. I imagine that's about where the cutoff is. If you get some good pistons in there, and nice cams, you will be VERY PLEASED. ------------------ '83 SC |
