RSR Interior Conversion
 

I'm now moving to the inside on my 74 hotrod RSR IROC-ish. Have to get rid of the burgundy interior. The dash, knee pads, and door panels are in excellent condition, but just don't go with the basic black I'm looking to create. Here is how it looked as purchased:

While the cracked windshield was out, I swapped the dash and knee pads. I also installed the dash mounted cutoff switch, clock and radio block off plates, swapped the door panels, and started removing the carpet:

After Christmas, seats and rest of the carpet come out to make room for the RS carpet set, roll bar, and vintage seats.

Then of course, drop the 2.7 and 915 (sold), finish assembling the 3.6 and rebuilt 915 LSD, install it, finish and paint the wing. A maniac's work is never done!

Not to nitpick, but just noticed the other day that Rennline sells a new floor board mount for the passenger side.

Otherwise LOVE the direction this is headed. Looking forward to seeing the final result.

Where did you buy that early dash with the speaker insert?

And did it fit without any drama?

I bought both in the classifieds here a few months ago. One minor crack in the usual spot in the dash pad that I will fill at some point. One blemish in the grill, but covered by the cutoff switch. This was the original style dash pad that should have been in the car. A PO cut a big hole in the metal dash for the center vent of the later model burgundy dash pad. Fortunately, it is completely covered by the dash pad.

Received my other two gauges today and finished the dash. The seats and the rest of the carpet are coming out soon and the RSR carpet, vintage seats, rollbar, and harnesses going in. Can't wait!

Victory!

Just need to clean out the glue and the RS carpet can go in. Also need to bang out a couple of dents in the floor where it appears some PO applied a poorly positioned jack. Anyone need any 87 interior panels or carpet?

Your pace is amazing, what are putting under the carpet?

Light weight padding. I need something for basic sound deadening and so the carpet goes in smoothly. Any suggestions?

Congrat's... the easy part is now over. Getting all of the glue out is a royal pain. Best thing I've found for it is a citrus-based paint stripper. Keep an eye on it and remove it after the glue is soft and before it does anything to the paint.

Thanks, I'll try the citrus based. I have citrus based adhesive remover. I was going to try that with a scraper. The issue is compounded by the PO installing the burgundy interior from an 87 930 using new glue over the old glue. Quite the mess!

For seats, I have two RSR seats from Vintage with the corduroy inserts, but movers packed the sliders and I can't find them!!!

I wouldn't use a scraper, especially a metal one. Not many flat areas, so you'll end up scratching the "overspray" that Porsche called "paint". They didn't paint the inside of the tub very well.

Once you get the glue soft enough, it comes right off.

I used a plastic scraper and lots of elbow grease to strip mine. Took a couple rounds of citrus strip to get it clean.

I am not sure about the carpet padding. It's a decision I haven't been able make yet. I have some closed cel foam for the job, but there seems to be debate on if that is the right material.

That burgundy steering wheel is incredibly cool. I have burgundy interior in my 84, and it has really grown on me. I take it that wheel is vintage, anyone know if they make them anymore?
