advice needed please
I recently was checking oil and such under the hood of my p-car and I discovered that the fan blade was scraping just a little on the bottom of the housing. I thought I noticed a noise but it usually happens before its warmed up and its kind of faint.
Anyway my question is can this be adjusted or is the whole alternator going to need replacing ? It is an 86 carrera . thanks

Jerry,
Take the fan belt off, and try to wiggle the fan around. If it moves, the alt bearings are probably on their way out. You can have a Auto-Electric shop re & re the bearings. Might as well check out the entire alt while you're there.

I've just been through this myself.
If you are LUCKY, you will only need to repack the alternator bearings. If you are like ME, the increased wobble in your alternator shaft has already fouled up the brushes inside the alternator and you will soon be shopping for a new one. I hope it is only the bearings.

Hmmm, sounds like all the '86 Carrera alternators are going out at the same time. Check out my thread from Monday: HELP! - Wierd Noise and I'm nervous

Jerry,
Had my alternator in the 85 overhauled 3 years ago by a local "mom and pop" store for under $75. Do not let anyone tell you that this alternator is special and needs to be done by a specialist. The replacement parts, with the exception of the armature, are all available locally and reasonably priced. Joe

The fan housing may be cracked ...
So, after you take the fan belt off to test alternator bearings ... loosen the band clamp around the fan housing, too, and see if the release of tension on the housing alters the clearance problem! Cracks can be TIG welded to repair, just be sure the welder is aware that it is Magnesium!

Warren has a good point here. Mine was also cracked and they did it locally for $20 extra. Looks like new and has lasted 3 years with no problem.

FAN BLADE SCRAPING ON HOUSING
IF BEARINGS ARE OK, THE PROBLEM IS A BAD FAN BLADE, WILL HAVE SOME CRACKS AND IS GETTING BIGGER.
THEN YOU NEED A NEW ONE. LET ME KNOW, HAROLD |

Harold,
Cracked fans can also be repaired by TIG welding!
