1972 or 1973 with Steel Wheels and Hubcaps?
I was wondering about originality and wheels. I've noticed that most 911s have alloy wheels (Fuchs or other) on them although I believe many cars, particularly early cars (longhoods) were actually delivered with steel wheels and hub caps.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone out there has an early 911 with original steel wheels and hubcaps, particularly a 1972 or 1973 911T, E, or S. Are these unpopular for some reason (too heavy?). If you have a car with steel wheels, I'd love to hear about and see some pictures! Thanks. |

I recently sold a set of matching date 6" steelies for the 72 E. No hubcaps.
They are VERY popular to some but as one member in my "for sale" thread noted, many were thrown out - just like the hubcaps for the set I sold. Fellow who bought them from Paris was tickled pink to get them. 1972 6" x 15" KPZ wheels

Back in the 1950s, virtually all cars came with steel wheels. This started to change in the 1960s as the benefits of alloy wheels were beginning to be realized (alloy wheels reduce unsprung weight, which improves the handling, etc.). I believe Porsche stopped offering steel wheels on any 911s beginning with the 1974 model year. There has definitely been an increased interest in steel wheels in recent years. It's a nostalgia thing.

I liked the OEM steel wheels on my 73.5 911T...I did the swap to some Fuch alloys, which did lighten the steering and handling ..but I always thought the steels were a nice retro look. The Fuch were a great look too.

Looking at the original sales brochures for the 73 911 run, it appears either the Fuchs or Cookie Cutter wheels were used. Fuchs might have been optional. Those dropped forged Fuchs were very expensvie. Add a set of hand painted center caps (Porsche crest) and it was all top shelf.
