70-71 engine compartment wiring questions
Lost my notes and diagrams. Some simple CDI wiring questions and a few more. I have deleted the need for the rear defroster. Let me ask questions picture by picture...this pair of "somewhat painted" wires comes from the front left of the engine compartment. Enters the compartment right next to the big harness bundle. Doesn't go to the rear defroster...what are they for?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388364409.jpg My CDI unit is right to the left. I have the harness for the CDI, but does this red/grey wire connect to the short red wired coming off the CDI plug? The black wire coming off the plug goes to the dizzy trigger, right? It goes to the same spade the purple black lead on the side of the dizzie connects to? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388364541.jpg And on the end of the CDI cable that goes to the coil, the yellow/white goes to one side of the coil and the braided ground goes to the other side. The braided wire has another end that gets grounded somewhere near the coil, and the black wire goes to the dizzie. Where does the second braided wire go? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388364729.jpg There are two wires that come out of the engine harness right next to the cold start for the Zeniths (which I deleted although) Do I just tie them off? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388364946.jpg There is also a red white wire in the engine harness that has been cut in several places and I could not figure out what they were originally intended for... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388365065.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388365101.jpg Near the 14 pin plug (still on the engine harness) there is a long spadeless yellow/blue wire that I cannot tell where it goes http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388365189.jpg Finally, this wire sticking out from the front of the electrical console...has no coresponding end. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388365350.jpg This red wire coming off a capacitor (?) above the VR is bare http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388365437.jpg And this grey/white wire coming into the engine compartment, in a sleeve with a double ground and a short white wire with a spade recvr? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388366193.jpg Lastly, the wires that are for the light in the decklid. I get the ground brown wire, but where does the spade pic up power? The black wire in front of the electrical console? Might be easier for someone with a stock 2.2 to shoot a few pics of the inside of the engine compartment for me. TIA guys...I appreciate it. Speedo |

wiring diagrams
Yeah, I have all these and have reviewed them...but they are not clear.

Then you need to re-read them or get a hold of the actual manuals. They dont get any clearer than the factory diagrams.

Looks like someone has done a lot of poor modifications to your original Engine harness...
Here is what a new CDI Harness should look like, and what new complete Engine and CDI harnesses look like: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388374935.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388375027.jpg From your pictures I don't think I would want to risk trying to guide you through trying to hook it up as there are some strange and incorrect things going on. The stray blue/yellow wire should be run to the 3 pin CDI connector for example... I could build you a new harness with installation instructions ready to be mailed by next weekend. I normally charge $425 for the MFI and CDI harness together, but I will reduce the price if you want it built strictly for carbs. PM me or email me if you are interested. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/740894-building-sc-mid-year-engine-harnesses.html |
Here are some pictures of a fuse panel I reconditioned for someone that may help with the cap wiring.

The red and brown wires in the first photo look like the fuel pump wires for an MFI Bosch pump mounted on the shoe on the rear torsion bar tube.

red and Brown fuel pump for cis

Thanks for the constructive suggestions...
The Bosch fuel pump is already wired up. The brown and red wires in the first pic must be for something else. Let me ask a few questions and whittle away at the wires. First and easiest. The lid light wires. Brown I get, power is taken from where? Little spade sticking out from under the console? CDI harness has the correct blue yellow wire already which goes to the coil. I understand that the braided wire goes to the coil also. But the braided wire is extended another 8 inches past where it connects to the coil. Is that extension viable? What could it have gone to? Maybe AC compressor at some point. Since the CDI has it's own blue yellow wire (heavier gauge, then the blue yellow wire smaller gauge) sticking out near the 14 pin must go somewhere else. And ...it doesn't appear on my diagram. In fact there are no blueyellow wires I see in the 14 pin on my diagrams. I will cap off the solenoid wires, and look over the other numbered answers with my diagram in front of me.
Thanks guys. If anyone with a 2.2 has a clean engine compartment and can shoot me a couple pics of the wiring on that side, I will buy you a beer. :D Speedo |
Speedo, I feel your pain. Was your car originally a T? When I restored my '71 I ended up ripping out all my wires and just started over. I created my own engine harness from scratch, eliminating a bunch of unused wire in the process. When I was done, I had good size box of left over wires.
One problem I came across was many of the options of the period required Porsche to repeat certain wire colors (they had not started to use dual tracers on their wires yet). The documentation for items like airconditioning and gas heaters is poor. You may also have some unused fuel injection wires there as well. You can see my engine wiring in this post, which has some good info you should check it out. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/787769-engine-electronics-2-2-into-66-options.html Good luck, |
Braided wire goes to the mount of the coil.
You can see it here in this picture of my old '73. (Boy, I miss that car...) One wire goes to the coil and the other goes to the case mount. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388473364.jpg The blue/yellow wire doesn't make sense. I have never run one in the numerous early year harnesses I have built, nor does it show up in the prints... What is the known history of the current engine harness in the car? |
Better Picture?

I would strongly recommend finding someone with 70-71 factory workshop manuals. The fold out color electrical wiring diagrams are very good. If you don't have exceptional eyesight you may need magnification. There was someone on this forum in the past that made a very nice much larger in color laminated wiring diagram for these cars. I have one and it is worth the money. Do a search.

Thanks to you guys, I have buttoned up most of the wiring. I did go back to the diagrams.. and sorted through the 14 pin connectors,
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388540130.jpg And this...was not so helpful http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388540189.jpg So I have three remaining questions... The three hole plug wired to the underside of the panel is for the rear defroster? This is a noise suppressor? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388540359.jpg And this wire which with age looks like a grey/white, or brown/white goes to the rear defrost relay? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388540475.jpg Other than that, the CDI harness is in place...just waiting for some new shrink tube. The warm-up solenoid wires are gone and the yellow blue wire in the engine harness has no purpose...it is here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388540668.jpg But not here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388540722.jpg Thanks for helping me wrap this stuff up SmileWavy |
