Windy sound at 50 mph
When driving above 50mph in my 86 Carrera, I begin hearing the mighty wind from my front windshield. I can push (from the inside) on the windshield and it moves (lose). The car at some point had a window out paint job, so I am thinking that they did not reinstall it correct. What to do?

How long have you had the car? Did it just start doing this?
First thing to do is to make sure the molding is in the grooves and sure you have the right glass and seal for your car. You can either buy an new seal and replace it, or add some rubber stripping in between the glass and the seal, or frame and the seal.

What snbush says.
If you do replace the seal, I have read where the best choice is the factory piece. It is not a hard job but dig up a friend that is comfortable working on cars for the rope pulling procedure.

I have had the car for 6 months and its been doing this since then. The metal molding appears to be in its correct place. If I push the windshield from the inside when driving, I can hear more wind coming through. I think I might take the plunge and reseal it, but already worrying about breaking it.
How could the window be this loose? What purpose does the molding serve? |

You can push a 911 windshield out by hand very easily, so don't push too hard. The molding locks into a groove in the seal and gives it some stiffness/support.
I would replace the seal with a genuine Porsche seal. HAve a glass shop that knows the ins and outs of a 911 do the work. Have them make sure that the trim is shaped correctly before it goes back in. I wouldn't drive the car in the rain until it gets fixed. JR |

The glass floats within the seal, so over time the glass has probably been pulled down by gravity, the seal may be worn or disfigured. My guess is the air is coming through at one of the corners, likely the passengers side. Try moving the seal with your fingers, or using a wooden wedge and mallet to force the seal out onto the frame, be careful because older windshields are brittle and break easily. To loosen the seal you can try sliding a credit card between the seal and the glass, you might then be able to move it if it is stuck in place. If you post a picture of your wind shield it might help to diagnose.

Drive faster to hold the windshield in better
![]() Seriously, the windshield in these puppies is incredibly [disturbingly] easy to remove. FWIW a glass shop isn't going to guarantee the work or the existing glass.
