HP Junkies....turbo debate
So in the thought that I will buy parts when I can afford it, then put it all together at once.....What direction would y'all recommend? Is the K-27(s?) the best way to go? Or would a "hybrid" or Garret turbo be the way to go. I will be planning on the biggest, baddest intercooler I can find. Most likely B&B headers, with my Borla muffler for awhile. Would like to change cams at some point, but most likely after the turbo system upgrade. Also a 1.0 bar spring.
I know some of you have gone with "stage" upgrades from various companies, Andial etc. Did you find these to be economically feasible compared to piece mealing your own system? Any suggestions will be appreciated. This is all going on my '79 930, with approx. 50,000 miles. |

Plan your goal, stay the course, and watch for bargains.
There are lots of wishy-washy turbo guys out there with too much money and time on there hands. The never ending quest for more power leaves many great low-mileage parts in its wake. The general upgrade tor the 930 is tried and true: - headers - cams - K27-7200 (or equivalent) - 1.0 bar spring or boost controller - mega intercooler What I prefer to call "stage II": - head work - Fuel management of some sort - custom gearing for the tranny Are you broke yet? Stage III: - twin turbo ImagineAuto or equivalent mega dollar monstrosity.

No this are for the Carreras
,But you can do some similar, lets see remove the a/c and relocate it if you wish to have a Monster Intercooler, turbo you can go with a T-62-1,T-66-1 with a .84 hot housing or go radical with a GT 30B Garrett ball bearing,it really depends how far you wish to go, so maybe a Carrera Intake Manifold,Headers,Tial Wastegate and Blow off valve,Recondition heads, keepers, springs,Injectors, etc etc,you must decide how much $$$ to spend because it will go FAST! and the question of the questions what to do with the injection system? Cams many ways to go,If you can do it yourself 4 sure you will save some $$Hope this helps a little

...really into HP?
1. twin plugged heads (a must) 2. intake ported to 39mm (so they accept Carrera intake manifold 5/5) i don't remember the numbers, but 930 heads are strangled. 3. CIS out, MAP-based EFI in, with direct fire. SDS, Haltech, Autronic etc. 4. Decent turbo, K27 at least, Garrett G30B as optimal choice, Holset being a weirdo choice. 5. Short-short headers 6. BIG intercooler 7. Excuse for a muffler after turbo 8. Rip out AC, sound deadening, back seats and spare wheel P.S. Flashy dump valves are for ricers...they don't make any power.

Thanks Rarly, thats a succint answer to my question. I am wondering about the "or equivalent" part. Is the k-27 (s, 7200, etc.) just the best bang for the buck, or is the G30B better or equivalent. BeepBeep, you sound like your saying the G30B is "optimum", can you tell me why?
Juan, don't take offense. I think it was you who started the HP Junkie movement. And from your previous posts, it sounds as though you have done tons of homework and I value your opinion as much as anyone elses. By the way guys, my a/c is already out. Trying to get more air in there because I was overheating. After an external cooler didn't seem to help it was traced to a pinched oil line. DOH! Oh well, it stays nice and cool, even in town on a hot day in Hawaii. |

I remember an posting in the last few days that Imagine Auto was working a deal on a group purchase on a intercooler. Might get ahold of him and get in on the deal.

I have been looking for deals on my 911Turbo (politically correct) for 9 months and it just payed off. I got a K27 BB intercooler and a BB muffler all for $1600 I am currently starting to take stuff apart and will be looking in to a Blitz boost control instead of a 1bar boost spring. I never thought I would find such a deal but if you keep your eyes open something will always comes around. Should add a few HP, really looking forward to it.....
Personally would say intercooler, K27 boost controll then headers, but I am looking at cost per HP and the K27 and the BC is the best bang for the buck.. My opinion at least but Rarely L8 is much much much smarter than I...Ask Stephan at imagine auto if you want to talk to someone he is the man!

Hey!! I'm glad I found this thread. I'm truly looking into adding an intercooler upgrade kit on my "non-intercooled" 1976 930. I have the K-27 turbo on my car and several other mods. I know I'll have to end up changing my '76 930 spoiler to a '78-'88 turbo tail for clearance pursposes.
Any suggestions, guys?? where do I get an intercooler upgrade kit and hopefully not spend too much $$$$$$. Can someone please provide me with a step by step procedure that includes prices. thanks in advance guys!

turbodrvn, call stephen at imagine auto. he is extremelly helpful and will provide you with the info you need. plus, as someone said above, he has a special on kokeln i/c now. about $200 off.
jkcrewsn, i am currently, right as we speak, in the process of installing k27, kokeln i/c, ghl headers and exhaust, and ebc. just on break right now to check some college scores..hehehe. anyhow, like rarly l8 said, these are supposed to be the best bolt ons to increase power. Some will say that the headers are the biggest contributor because of lighter weight, more hp, and quicker spool up. i don't know the difference between the k27 and the g30b. the k27 is the tried and true method of quickening in spool up time on the 930, plus it is cheap at like $800.

turbodrvn - the "least amount of headaches" way to intercool an early turbo would be to use stock '78/9 parts. The '76/7 throttle body is different than the intercooled models. You will need the intake, throttle body, turbo to intercooler pipe, and of course an intercooler. The later model turbo tail is also a must.
John Walker has done a few of these. Give him a call.

Imagine Auto..it was either $800 or $895. Still cheap, relatively speaking.

RarlyL8 & 930Chas: Thanks for your suggestions, guys! I truly appreciate it!
I'm pretty new in the Porsche market and trying to learn as much as possible. Knowing me and my history of modifying my cars, I'll become a CRAZY Horsepower Addict and would always want more power for my '76 Porsche 930!! I just have to stay on a reasonable budget at this time of my life........for now. Happy tuning to everyone!
