seeking guidence

hello, i'm in need of some help. I'm extremely new and ignorant when it comes to Porsche, but have always liked the 911s but never had the opportunity to own or even drive one. I came across a 1980sc for sale, test drove it and looked it over a while. I've been trying to educate myself in a short period of time because I REALLY REALLY like this car! it has had 2 owners. come to find out the original owner is a friend of the family I briefly spoke with him about some of the specs of the car. before it was delivered to him in 80, the dealership had the car and motor sent to a race shop I think he said garritson or garrison racing in cali and had the 3.0 worked over and installed the larger jugs making it a 3.2, larger cam, webber carbs, suspension work, auxilery oil cooler in the front bumper, I think he said high compression pistons, and special exhaust system. like I said earlier i'm totally new, and may have misspoke some of the technical, but i'm trying. lol
after driving it and looking it over, it could use some tlc on exterior and interior but descent shape, on the otherhand the engine has some issues. there is some small popping in carbs, hesitation while excellerating almost like a bogg. and when I turned the ignition off there was a significant backfire from exhaust. there is a oil drip on the exhaust that smokes and underneath the engine there is some oil spots. and the tach is kinda squirrely. the present owner obviously doesn't know much about this car either and not much help, he let the car sit for 8 months or so, and brought It to some shade tree buddies to try and get things working better but not sure if they did more damage than good. supposedly they changed distributor cap, coil, plugs and wires messed with the timing and valves?
I want to take the plunge and buy it but not quite sure what i'm getting myself into. i'm hoping it may just be a timing or carb issue, or even a ignition issue. I would gratefully appreciate any help. thank you so much.

Welcome aboard.
Check out the links above, do some reading and ask some non-rambling questions using a little better punctuation...
Just an FYI:
Making your first post and then not being on this site searching and reading 15 minutes later will not get a lot of responses.

How many miles on the car?

Search for PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection)

Where are you located? Maybe someone local to you would take a look at it for you.

Oh cut him some slack he's just excited!

If you are really hot on the car then short circuit your research and get the car inspected by a reputable mechanic. If you don't know one in your are let us know where you are from and we will know who is good and who is not. It is also possible that someone here knows the car, but if the previous owner let the car sit for 8 months perhaps not.

How automotively inclined are you? Are you planning on doing lots of work yourself? Or taking it to someone to work on it? If you plan on working on it yourself you might be able to hook up with folks from here to learn from. It takes a good amount of investment in time and tools if you don't have a basic set already. Keep these things in mind when you make your decision on the car you are looking at.

Oh and pic would be good too Always like seeing P cars

LOL, Yeah, I was a little grumpy last night, traffic was plain stupid as I was making my way home from being out of town all week...

To the OP,
WELCOME ABOARD!!!
Lots of help and information always available here.
Go get a thorough inspection and then buy it at a price that reflects what they find!

Good Luck.

Man...this is a tough one. On one hand, there are alot of goodies on the car. On the otherhand, we are not sure just how nuch work it needs. My gut tells me to walk away. My best advice is the following... pass on this one and find another thats running good with a decent PPI. I think you would enjoy driving the car and performing elective upgrades rather than fighting with this one. Depending on the price, it still might be a good buy. I wish i could take my own advice, i just bought an 81 in boxes about 2 months ago!!

hey, thanks for all the responses. I do apologize for rambling a bit. it was late and have a lot on the mind.
yes, i'm totally in love with the car. I'm doing my best to keep the emotions at bay, but its sorta like the old high school girl you never had a chance with. I remember seeing this particular car a couple times when I was a kid, and 20 something years later it comes across my path again.
i'm planning on doing as much of the work as I possibly can at home. I do have a little mechanical inclination, a few standard tools, and access to machine shop equipment.
the sc has 126k miles on her, i'm located in south west Louisiana. asking 12k and got him down at 10k.

If that car is rust free and leak down test is good, that's a steal! Buy it!

Bosche blue coil?
See if you can post some better engine area pictures.
If you get it for 10K or less, have 10K in the bank..
They are all 20-25K cars...
Find someone in your area for a PPI.

one little spot of surface rust where front windshield meets hood. the owner said he had it repainted original color sometime back, because the paint was dull and old.

Buy it before you get snaked by a broker on here. They're probably triangulating the exact location now. Heck of a deal.
