Question Meet my 31-year-old window motor (winter project)

I’m rehabbing my passenger door fully on my ‘83SC Targa – already removed the regulator, installed a replacement pin that keeps the required regulator spring tension, and I’ve got fresh felt waiting to be installed.

I’ve turned my attention to the motor, and I have a few questions:

1. What is the best way to get the nylon (I think) gear out of the motor head to clean out the old grease? See pic for the part I mean. Do I have to remove the drive gear on the other side of the motor head? How is this done?
2. The bottom of the motor case has a recess for the end of the drive shaft to pivot (turn) on. I know there was grease in there at one time, what is the correct amount to put in there (seems like not a lot at all), and what is the best way to get grease way down into the long portion of the motor case?
3. What is the best grease to use? I’ve got both Lucas “Red Extra Tacky” and “Heavy Duty” on hand. What’s the right amount to place in the motor head?
4. It looks like the motor has been open at least once before, I think there’s been some type of liquid gasket applied. I think the studs that did hold the motor head cover to the motor case are busted – any recommendations on the way to reapply the cover?

And of course, “while I’m in there”:

5. I’m thinking the door latch mechanism is a good thing to address at this time – do I have to take the door handle off to do this?
6. Any other suggestions while the window motor is out, and the door is wide open?

Thanks, Pelicans!

Nice pictures, keep us posted on your progress. I'll be tackling this project next month myself.

I can't help you with the motor stuff, but research seems to suggest that the rubber strip that rubs against the outside of the window as it retracts into the door (AKA the squeegee) should be replaced as well as the felt runners and other rubber parts. It's all under Body and Seals on PP. I'm just going to go through that list when I get into the door and see what needs to be replaced. Hopefully all this work will mean quieter targas!

Yes, I've replaced the squeegee as well. If your door has never been rehabbed, prepare to find a bunch of stuff at the bottom of the door, including the pin tensioner like I did.

Prepping for this project, I've collected a number of sources that have given me the confidence to tackle this project (I'm new to DIY auto). I'll list them here:
