I've an '83 like yourself and about 30k or sooner ...I swapped in a euro with more HP and the later Carreras had an oil cooler on the 915 that I/we don't have.
I also run in AZ summer temps so I take that into consideration.
Long hard drives in the summer equal an earlier change.

I do it along with a 15K service. 6 pints of kendall/$30, better safe than sorry. I dump a lot of swepco out of them thar 915s. lots of positive response on how much better it shifts now.

Bought mine March 2012 never knew what's on it. So I attempted to change the tranny fluid (DIY) last Christmas. I used 4 qts of Kendall bought from the host and noticed better shifting. I was thinking of doing it every 4th oil change or something like 12k since I already know how to do it.

Interesting...

According to the '71 owner's manual, transmission fluid is to be changed every 12k miles.

According to the '72 owner's manual, transmission fluid is to be changed every 10k miles.

Bruce Anderson says change it every 30k miles.

Get yourself a pump...or at lease a piece of hose you can squeeze the oil through...that angle into the case is a little flat.

Make sure you can get the fill plug open before you remove the drain plug. -J
