Window, rear
Well,
As the title says I decided to replace the rear seal, the window would clunk over bumps, mucho annoying! After having Phil T. give me an advanced tutorial on the front windscreen, I decided the little rear window would be a breeze. Wrong answer. Read a bunch of threads, the manual, and went back out and had another go. ![]() ![]() Jacks dog bed and sack of sand was too pedestrian so I did it my way: ![]() ATV tire, big old rock and some motorcycle tie downs. Gotta use plenty of lube! ![]() The manual is sparse, so I had to use the 2 undamaged braincells I had left, and it almost wore them right out. The obvious wasn't too obvious, start the install at the top, double wrap of string and pull, the seal into the car. Once the seal was all in,the old mallet and curved piece of wood to position the seal and trim in the opening. I think the secret is in the prep, get the window centered, after lubing like crazy, and pull the cord evenly, side to side. Funny thing was, with the proper set up, the pull took 2 minutes, with the majority of the time was me moving from the left side of the car to the right. Given the shape of the window and gasket/seal orientation, it was counterintuitive to start at the top of the window for the cord pulling. Getting the gasket into the window opening top first allowed the bottom to pull in and set. Another possible factor was getting the wider section in first. In retrospect, the only reason to have a second person would to apply pressure to the upper corners and reducing the cord pull time to 1:30 seconds. The overall learning curve was steep but relatively shallow, so that gives this job a: 2 banana rating for technical difficulty 4 banana rating for technique necessity. After doing the front and now the rear, the fear of the unknown is past only to be replaced with respect for the artisanal skills of the original assemblers.

What's interesting about the process outlined in the manual is step 12, the sealant.

Didn't look in the General section of the manual to get a listing of the material type, wondering if it is a butyl type sealant. The manual is the original red 2 part manual, early style. The Mid-Year and Carrera manuals had no reference whatsoever.
