Filling manual trans via gear shifter area

Putting a factory short shift kit into my 1980 911sc this weekend and figured I would drain and refill the manual trans gear oil while I am at it. Since I will have the shifter area open, I was wondering if there is any reason I can't refill the trans from there...anybody know? Thx

If you have manuals I suggest you review them as to the procedure for flushing/changing the transmission fluid. Such is done at the transmission which is towards the back-end of the 911 (kinda underneath the back seats hence that hump in the middle of the back seats).

If you do not have manuals I suggest you obtain such. A manual(s) will pay for itself many times over.

Also note, the PP website has a variety of tech. articles. One explains the short shift change upgrade procedure and another explains changing/flushing the transmission fluid. Neither is near the other.

If you mean fill the trans from the inside of the car through the tunnel? Jack up the car and look at the fill hole and the end of the tunnel where the shift rod comes out and you will get your answer. It could be technically possible but not worth the trouble.

...and just as a friendly tip...try and undo the fill plug first as sometimes they are difficult to turn. Last thing you want is a tranny with no fluid that you now need to take to the shop.

First off, do remember to remove the fill plug before the drain plug in case there are any issues.

Sure, why not? If a gravity feed is your method then you are only looking for the quickest way "up". On the negative side you are introducing heavy sulpher fumes inside a cabin. If you can picture this, my car is jacked up for (level) access and a hose is introduced into the fill point then threaded up to the side of the car, where the tube and funnel are set in place using blue painter's tape. Now I have a pan under the trans for overfill, and I put in my very best estimate of fresh trans fluid just before closing shop. Next morning/visit, I remove the tube and gravity has filled the trans to the fill/level hole (use forefinger and check pan for tell tale overfill amount confirming full amount).

BlueT,
Cannot be done from inside...unlike most trannies all you'll find in that tunnel is linkage...no tranny.

blue,

You need to look closely in your car and transmission. Or find someone who has done the transmission oil change before. What you are thinking is not feasible.

Just buy a hand pump from the local parts store it screws right onto the transmission fluid container and makes it very easy.
