Window Down and Won't Go Up!!
 

Ok guys, I have a dilemma. It was beautiful today, 68 degrees and sunny. I decided to take the Targa to pick up my daughter from cheer practice. Windows down and cruising. Problem comes when I go to put the windows up. Driver window goes up no problem, passenger will not go up with either the driver door switch or the passenger door switch. The switch on the driver door has been a little sticky so I had on on hand that I hadn't changed out yet. Changed the switch and still nothing. Any ideas?

check fuse. do you hear motor running. is it all the way down, if not try to pull it up with hand to help it along while motor is trying to move it.

Window is all the way down, no sound coming from the window motor, can't find any bad fuses. Which fuse is for the window? Wouldn't the fuse control both windows? Driver side works without issue.

I had a bolt fall out of the window regulator allowing the bracket to over-rotate and jam with the window down. It was an easy fix since the bolt was rolling around the bottom of the door but I had to strip the door down to get to the bolt and the bracket. The worst part is not breaking anything during the dissassembly/assembly process.

I feel there is no power getting to the window motor. I hear nothing when either the passenger switch on drivers door or the switch on the passenger door.

Don't want to bring bad news, when that happened to me, 87 Carrera, window motor was shot. You could pull the door panel and check wiring with a meter, would do that before buying one, or having it rebuilt. This dude, Auto Electric Remanufacturing, Marietta Ga., says he can rebuild any 12v motor. He rebuilt an alt. and the engine compartment fan for me and way cheaper than new. Does great work, too.

You might pull the passenger window switches out first. Check the connections and 12v.

Passenger window switch on drivers door is brand new today. switch on passenger door connections look fine. I do not have my meter at home here so cannot check voltage. Which wires do I need to test on the back of the switch to check for 12 volts?

keep in mind that the passenger door switch is tied to the drivers door switch for the passenger window.
I grabbed a 12V battery and pulled the wires for the motor off the switch and plugged them into the battery..Window went up! turner out to be the drivers side switch for the passenger window...go figure:eek: Thanks Don! experience is sometimes the best teacher.

Yup. Check the driver's side switch if the passenger one doesn't get voltage. You can pretty much use a test light with one end on ground.

I assume I need to test with key on but not with window switch engaged.

Does anyone know which wires to test on the switch? Which ones are constant power? Where the fuse for the windows is?

My buddies 930 does this. His switch is the culprit. Work it back and forth a couple times and its back in action!

I suppose he wont buy a switch until hes stranded. Hahaa

Ok, here is what I found. If I test across the two bottom wires in the above photo I have 12 volts on all three switches with the key in the on position. I assume this points to a bad window motor.

Any other thoughts?

I had the same problem on my 87' 911. Pull the motor out, disassemble it from the gear drive. Give the worm gear a couple of turns by wrapping a rag around the gear and carefully use a pliers to turn it. Hook it up to 12vdc and see if it spins. If so, then your armature is cruddy. Pull the motor apart, carefully clean the armature with some thinner followed by running 600 grit paper gently around the armature. Slap it back together and your home free. If it doesn't run when hooked up to 12vdc following your manually turning the gear you motor is dead. Just be carful when taking it apart and re-assembling so you don't damage the brushes.
