Noise from behind the Air Pump unit.

Hello, everyone,

I am hoping someone can help out with my question, please.

My friend has a 1980 SC Porsche, which I have the privillege to drive at times.

Recently a noise has developed and the symptons are:

1) A noise is coming from behind the upper pulley unit and the main Crankshaft pulley, more so towards from the rear of the top(left-hand side) assembly pulley, i.e behind the "blackcylinder that holds the filter.

2) The noise is hard to describe. It sounds like a squeak at times.but more towards as if something is loose, or may be a rubbing noise.

3) The noise is only apparent during idling, but disappears when the motor speed is raised from idle speed.

As you may have already gathered, we are no experts or very slightly mechanical minded, but hope that someone may be able to give us some ideas as to what may be some possible indicators.

I very sincerely thank you all in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Kindest regards,
R Bhairo.

Could it be the fresh air blower fan? Is this noise present when the heat is off? (red levers down next to the handbrake) Mine was making a squeak similar to that described.

My sincere gratitude as you are the only one who took time to offer a possibility of what may be wrong.

Thank you!!

Try removing the v-belt that runs the air-pump, to see if that is causing the sqeak. Mine was before I removed it.

The other possibility is that the bearings in the pump itself may be getting old. I would concur with the last posts suggestion of removing the v-belt and listening. You can then also turn the pulley by hand to listen/feel for any friction that may generate a squeak at higer rpms.

Cheers,GB
