Porsche Crest Need HELP replacing a steering wheel!

I'm trying to replace a standard steering wheel on my '88 Carerra with a Momo. I took the brackets off the back, but can't figure out how the horn "button" comes off. There are some esoteric looking screws that are exposed after the brackets were removed (attached picture), but they obviously require some specialized tool if they need to be taken out.

I'm thinking it just pops off, but I'm reluctant to try that if it doesn't. I thought there was a posting concerning this, but have been unable to find it. Any ideas?

Mick

It took some playing with but my stubborn horn cover did come off my 87 targa. I grabbed the pad right above and below the attachment points and had to pull pretty hard to get it to pop off.

The key was pulling from a location as close to the attachment points and not being bashful about jerking pretty hard. I know this is'nt a ton of help, but try it. Just don't send me a bill for breaking anything.

Mick,
Sit in the driver seat, grab the horn pad by the sides. Pull. Hard. Harder!
Keep your nose at a distance.
There you go! it's off.

Thanks guys, here's the newly installed Momo wheel dyed to match the interior, complete with the Porsche crest!

However he says, the clearance between the steering wheel and the top of the dash is tight and the bolts that came with the wheel only allow for minimal spacers. I'm thinking larger spacers when I locate some longer bolts, but does anyone have a better solution or did I do something wrong?

Great looking steering wheel!

I really like the look of the new steering wheel. I have an 87 carrera with the original steering wheel. What model Momo is the wheel and were you able to order the P crest with it. Looking to upgrade mine. One more question, where did you get the leather dyed to match the car interior? Thanks

Momo makes a long and short hub. The long hub gives you good dash clearance. I need the seat all the way back so I went with the long hub and two spacers. The spacers come with longer screws but if you put two spacers on, you'll have to get new, longer screws.

Thanks for the compliments and the hub information. The wheel is the Momo "Top Power Color" and it was black/silver, but the silver (gray) didn't match a thing in the car, so I had a local detail shop strip and dye it. I can't give you much more info than that, as I didn't watch him. He said it was difficult and charged me $75 (pre-agreed) to prove it. I'm sure I'll have to touch it up periodically, but how hard can that be?

I bought the wheel from Performance (1.800.423.3173), I suspect if you get the right guy on the phone, he can find one of the centers with the unadvertised Porsche crest.

Looks nick, Mick. My stock wheel on my 87 was scuffed up pretty badly by the wheel lock used by a previous owner. If yours is in goo shape and you want to get rid of it, I might be interested. Actually, the part I need most is the center horn panel. I'm in An Diego too. Thanks.

Thanks Chuck, I better hold on to it in case I need to go back to the original for whatever reason or sell the car someday.

I replaced my stock wheel with a Momo Champion today, and used the Smart Racing Products 1.25" spacer. It comes with the longer screws. It allowed me to move the seat back to obtain a better arm/leg distance from pedals and wheel. It's pricey, but a solid piece. Looks better than two spacers, too.

I'd like to source that P Crest horn button. Any ideas?

Thanks for the Smart Racing Products info.

Please tell me what you mean by wanting to source the Porsche horn button.

I mean "Where did you buy, steal, manufacture, or otherwise procure that nice horn button for your Momo?"

Thanks.

Oh, I was confused since I had already answered that above, “I bought the wheel from Performance (1.800.423.3173), I suspect if you get the right guy on the phone, he can find one of the centers with the unadvertised Porsche crest.”

I thought you were trying to find a source to sell them yourself, but we all know how tight Stuttgart has become.
