Installing AppBiz RS Carpet ?

I'm getting ready to install a new AppBiz RS carpet in my 82 SC and I have a few questions regarding the fitment. I test fit a number of the pieces and was wondering if I need to cut any excess off prior to glueing in particular areas for instance underneath the rear side windows or on the door sill pieces that run between the outer seat slider. There seems to be alot of extra material but I hate to cut any of it. Any help is much appreciated.

I did not need to trim any pieces on my 83.

Just go slow and test fit the piece one at a time

and did I mention go slow

I never did interior work before and mine came out pretty good

I did trim some excess from mine but only after test fitting everything mult times especially where there is overlap, you don't want to mess that up.
Try heating the material in the dryer then stretching it for a snug fit right before applying the glue and laying it in place.

ok I started installing the carpet and I'm a bit confused on how to properly install the rear quarters. Reviewing a bunch of photos on the web and reading through instruction it looks like my carpet is different. Some of the pics and instructions have the upper and lower rear quarters as one piece my carpet it 2 pieces. Here's a pics of what i'm dealing with. I've installed the lower piece and glued it down. The upper piece looks way to big the seams look out of place, not with the lines of the wheel well and body. What's really throwing me off is the rough seam that looks like it will be exposed near the driver rocker, rear footwell, once complete. If someone could post a photo of what this lower rough seam should look like it would be much appreciated.
THanks, Matt

Can someone tell me if that rear quarter carpet should be pulled up all the way so the tip of the carpet that you see in the last photo stops at the door piller and is tucked in. That's the only way I see if looking good, only problem is alot of material needs to be cut from the top.

I'd vote for going ahead and cutting it from the top then as long as it doesn't create any new gaps- you have a lot of leeway for adjustment at the top of that back quarter with the trim that will cover just below the quarter windows... these kits usually have a little extra material somewhere for just such situations. (I put in a new carpet kit a couple of years ago and came across several similar dilemmas, as long as you look at it through the lens of how all the pieces work together to cover the holes, you'll be fine!)

just my .02!

You need to pull/stretch that lower section behind the door jamb sheet metal. Trim any excess from the top, as needed.

go to http://www.original911.com/docs/rs_carpet_guide.pdf - you will find a series of pictures with the individual pieces and where and how they go...

I did this a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure if this picture is close enough to the area you are working on, but it is how I did it. I did have to do some trimming, and really happy with how it turned out. Take your time...

I have a question...According to Pelican specs, the RS carpets sets weigh more than the regular sets...like 6 lbs more.(21 vs. 15)
Why would I get an RS set and GAIN 6 lbs?

The RS carpet does indeed weigh more than the regular sliverknit that comes in the later cars. There seems to be widespread misunderstanding. The word lightweight in "lightweight RS carpet" refers to the type of carpet that came in the lightweight version of the Carrera RS, not the weight of the carpet.

If you delete the rear seat backs....you will save weight.
I did it because the interior was tired, old and nasty. Since I can't use the back seat area, the RS carpet set worked out perfectly.

Is it the weight of the carpet material itself, or the fact that there is more of it? An RS kit has many more pieces than a stock 911...

It's both. The carpet is heavier and stiffer, and as you mentioned there is more of it.

Of course, since one removes the back seats and rear shelf to install it, the net result is less weight than before.

What would really be best is to have an RS carpet kit made out of sliverknit instead of the heavy grey perlon.

Mine was the Sliverknit and it was a nice compromise. I wasn't ready to give up the nice plush carpet. It also happens to conform really well around the curves. The downside was the price.

How about 89 Targas? What does one do for RS type carpeting for that?

It poured rain all day Saturday so I spent some time working on my interior. Here's a pic. The key to the rear quarter panel carpet install is lots of stretching and patience. I did end up cutting some excess at the top but this was after everything was tucked in and glued.
