Will a 225 60 16 tire fit a 9x16 wheel?

I got a deal on some Michelin MXV4 plus tires and was wondering if 225's or even 205's would fit or would they look too goofy.

I have 205 60 16 on 7.5" wheels in front which look just fine but would the 9" wheels be too much of a stretch for the rears?

Cheers,

Joe

I don't have a chart with me, but I'd bet the 225s fit. I might stay away from the 205s on 9" wheels.

That being said, if I had 9" wheels, I'd be smiling. I'd put on 245s or so, for the rear. It's all about traction.

I'm running 235/60's on the rear now and clearances are marginal with the SC flares and lowered, so the slighly narrower tires seem more attractive.

Is there a chart that tells how wide a wheel can be used on a tire?

I have 9" Fikse on the rear of my SC with 245/40 Yokos. I was looking at this issue yesterday and noted that the 245's are probably the smallest I would want to go b/c the tread is about 1/4 of an inch inside the wheel width. 225's would be too small and would pull the sidewall to far in. My .02

Remember that he is asking about a 225 width, 60 series tire on a 16 inch wheel, not a 225 width, 50 series tire. Since the correct tire for a 16 inch wheel would be a 225/50 or 245/45, I would think that a 225/60 would be too tall for this application. Besides, a 9 inch wheel is too wide for a 225 width tire.
Let me clarify that I have no direct experience with this particular sizing since my car is an early narrow bodied car, but did a lot of research when trying to get some track tires under my 325is.

Joe:

Go to www.tirerack.com and look up the Michelin MXV4 plus on the tire page and then choose specifications. You will find the preferred tire fitment per Tire Rack.'

Good Luck

That's strange, at Tire Rack, the 225/60's will fit on 6-9" rims but the 235/60's are only good for 6.5-8.5" rims. Seems the larger tires should fit the wider rims...right?

Joe,
I did a fair amount of tire-bustin when I was younger, and I think you may have trouble getting the beads to seat on a 9" wheel. Plus my personal opinion (which means absolutly nothing) is that 60 series tires would look goofy on a 9" wheel, plus it would wear the heck out of the shoulders of the tire.

Mark,

The 235's on 9" rims that I've been running on are doing just the opposite and wearing down the centers even though they are smaller than the stock 245's. But then the 245's wore out the centers too.

But it does seem strange that the recommended maximum wheel width for the 225's is an inch wider than that of the 235's.

That does seem odd. I would have thought that stretching the beads out that far would cause the center of the tire to go concave and wear the shoulders first. What is the tread width on the new set?

Mark,

Here are the specs for the MXV4's:

205/60VR16 91V 400 A A 5.5-7.5" 6.5" 8.3" 7"

The deal I have is on the 205/60's. I hope he has the same deal on 225's.

Porsche Crest Rims and Tire sizes

The section width of a 225/60/16 tire is 225mm

The section width of a 9 by 16 wheel is 9 times 25.4mm

which is 228.6mm. It will be fine since this is not an

exceptionally low profile tire.
