You talking a "stand" or the "P__" yoke specific to the engine ? Stands are everywhere used, new, borrowed, not expensive. They are kinda all very similar and since our engines aren't massive, you don't need something extremely special unless you just want it. I bought a new from Northern Tool with a great coupon and sold after I was done for 75% of new cost so there is your "rental" with no time limit I add.
The yoke, same thing. Is a very desirable item used on this forum. If you buy new, you can sell easy for 75 or 80% of your purchase cost.

Question from me because I don't know. Is the yoke generally required for a 2.7? I have a basic engine stand such as what Jesse is referring to.

Yoke

Not likely to find one for rent (IMHO). If a local Porsche engine builder "likes" you, he probably has a bunch around, maybe would rent or sell one. If you're creative, I've seen people use the "universal pc" that comes with a stand. Alot of comments that its potentially a bad idea with our aluminum case. Put a request to buy in the for sale forum for a yoke, thats where I sold mine. The winter engine build season is winding down now.

Not sure what a rental would cost but I bought the ~$90 5-arm yoke from ebay and it was 100% rock solid, used throughout my rebuild, spun the motor round and round and never a hairy moment. Also used a 750lb harbor freight stand that was about $36 after coupons. Very cost effective solution.

Yeah, it is pretty useful, but a big PITA to store when not used. I have lent it out for 3 engine rebuilds / mods to friends already! They are getting more affordable. I bought mine used when they were $300 new. Mine is a 4 arm, IIRC, but it held everything fine of course.

I've never used the porsche yoke and never had any trouble. Perhaps someone can explain why it's needed. I have a harbor freight quality engine stand and it's worked fine, just needed spacers and long bolts.

one thing about the ebay yoke that ive found was that the flat face of the mounting surface does not have a relief point at the oil cooler like the factory ones do. this caused it to put a bunch of pressure on the oil cooler also causing the mount surface to not sit secure right against the block. ive used mine twice and have removed the oil cooler prior to mounting the yoke, and reinstalled the oil cooler after removing the motor from the stand for reinstall. look close after securing it, as I did not notice this until after I mounted the yoke with it on the stand and I tried to remove the oil cooler. it also will play havoc with the install of the under bell housing oil line if you've back dated your oil lines, or have an early car. the yoke will not allow for it to be run for correct routing or to get it secured to the tin just beyond the oil cooler where my backdated line has a mounting tab.

I would use the ebay yoke again (not two off seasons in a row im hoping) as I own one, but do heed what ive found above.

oh, and forgot to mention, I had a stand and a yoke you could have used as a fellow bay area brethren... still got it if you can return what you've bought.

Yoke/Stand

I simply sold my yoke, stand, cam tool, etc after I was done,no sense in them getting rusty for 10 years. Big fan of keeping my skills of acquisition in check, not planning to do another complete build for a "long" time. Just purchase or borrow again should that ever happen. Kept my selection of jack stands and hi lift Arcan jack and use them regularly. Also kept the motorcycle/atv engine lift in case an engine pull is req. for clutch or leaks, that did happen one year after my build. I can get the motor out in maybe 3 hours by myself, a good feeling to know I'm able.

To do a full engine rebuild you need to split the case. The yoke supports the motor from one case half i.e. supports the case from just 2 bolts so you can split the case
